It used to be a common term. A farmer had enough life insurance to cover all debts. When he died, that money was enough to pay off the farm mortgage. His family could live comfortably.

I can barely get into Heinlein's other books. I got about a few chapters into that before I gave up. I managed to read The Cat That Walks Through Walls or something like that, but the ending was terribly disappointing.
Forever War and the rest of Haldeman's stuff is my thing.

Never read any of his works, but i did watch Robot Jox. so he's ok in my book.
If you haven't read it, i suggest taking a look at Enemy Mine, by Berry Longyear. it had a movie made after it with Denis Quaid.
I like Denis Quaid.

That's how Verhoeven interpreted it, and I can honestly see why he does. Heinlein does glorify the military a bit and Federation is rather utopian. In a brief sentence, it's plausible.
But Verhoeven is also unfair is adapting the Federation military. The Mobile Infantry in the book are small numbers of volunteer highly trained operators, like if the US army disbanded all combat arms except for Special Forces. Even signing up for the Federal Service to join the MI, you take the oath but if you don't walk in when you're deployed to boot camp, the only penalty is you can't apply for Federal Service again. There's an impressive amount of effort that goes into scaring away people that aren't committed, something that's not seen in the films.

I thought it was from early aviation.
Pilots would occasionally die crashing in a farm or crop, the farmer's would be compensated for the damages. Didn't take long for the farmers to figure out they could inflate the costs until the crash and pilot's death had paid for the farm.

Because using live rounds in exercises and getting a knife shoved down your hand by your DS is totally a warm welcome.

>Because using live rounds in exercises and getting a knife shoved down your hand by your DS is totally a warm welcome.
Live rounds is a thing every soldiers has to at some point. The thing with the knife was a forceful way of demonstrating a point. Both of these events in the film were for the already indoctrinated.
Btw, these two events have counterparts in the books. Instead of a FF incident with the live fire, Rico gets chewed out for FF by use of a tactical nuke in a simulation exercise. The knife thing happens without Zim impaling the guy's hand, instead he calmly explains why it's useful to be trained with a variety of tools.
In the book there's more academic approach to war and soldiering. The film I guess is meant to be analogous to space Nazi's, which emphasize the solidarity of the masses, cleansed by tough and brutal training.

It was on the way and at least half done. Then Steakley died. I've read the first chapter of the second book, wish I could read the rest even unfinished because Steakley's writing was just phenominal.
