I have to guess PT wouldn't be important because you have to defend such a small area.

It's the whole town, a single matriach doesn't matter and they can't really get to her anyway because of the checkpoints. If the cartels wanted revenge, they'd target the whole town.
They probably do some PT anyway but this is a very rural part of Mexico so they won't be as fat as the city dwellers. Farm kids are fitter usually.

Probably yeah, good comparison. Checkpoints, questioning visitors, patrolling perimeter.

This only really happens when the cartel is arming the towns people and then takes over the town entirely shortly after. I mean, where else do they get their guns from?

Farming shotguns/rifles and machetes.
I think the townswomen did the initial action just with machetes. They got the guns later when they realised that they'd need checkpoints and patrols.

Saw a documentary on Netflix about the same thing. Poor towns in Mexico banded together to form a militia to fight off the cartel. Man who started it all was named Ramirez. Can't remember the name of documentary. They ended up getting corrupt and the leader thrown in prison for arms dealing and such. Government stepped in, broke them up.
So long as they stay straight, they will be doing fine.
