calling Chimps

My SLR104UR arrived today. It's great, except my upper handguard/gas tube rattles around a bit. I understand that's totally normal for krinkers, but I'm way too autistic to allow it.

Anyway, I remember you saying you rigged up an AK74 handguard spring (I think?) to take out the slop. Any details on how you did that? Anything I should watch out for?

I'll mess around with it tonight after work, so I thought I'd solicite advice.

Imagine the butthurt if you were so rich that $1100 was fucking nothing, and you bought it and made a thread about cutting it up into little pieces. Some shit like "I wonder if it's green all the way through...let's find out!". Just imagine the butthurt. It would be monumental.

Just put a regular gas tube spring on there, figure out where you need to bend it, put it in a vise like pic related and bend it til it fits. It will need to be bent at a pretty sharp angle to fit in there, but be careful, the steel isn't meant to be beant like that and can easily break at such a sharp angle. Takes all the slop out.
>>

I'd do a full mock Daewooguy YouTube video full of pretentious mud tests with them, tactical flip reloads, ending with a dramatic penetration test on translucent smokes and aluminum prototypes just to show how real I was about that AK

Is $95 too much for an x39 OD ((10)) mag? What would a fair price be? I think regular ((10)) mags go for ~$40 and this is the first time I've seen one in OD after watching the marketplace for the last few months. Is it worth literally x2 the price?

If none of the above, if it's a Japanese car that's made in the last 4 years, it is. If it is none of these, and its a truck, you're probably fine.
If it's a minivan I am sorry.

In the same vein as new furniture, I'm in the market for getting a stained ironwood furniture set. Preferably something like a dark grey stain, just to make it look like "iron" wood.

Yes, almost explicitly for the pun.

Sadly, iron wood designs hasn't had a site update in almost a year and there's no way I'm taking a chance with eBay. Any ideas on where to look?

from arfcom:
>that's a picture of a USGI magazine that has all of the moly dry-film finish worn off... USGI mags have had several colors of anodizing: - gold/bronze - silver - brown - gray
well that's boring. I thought it could be anodized (seen the other shades before, never gold on a GI mag), but it happened to be the exact hue of a proper TiN coating and showed no wear, so I got excited thinking someone else had the same idea I did.
Zasta seems like someone who would try different coatings because he actually does smithing.

TiN and TiAlN are awesome coatings, I had a space pen coated in TiN that I used daily for years in high school and college and it held up like a champ, dropped on the floor and jostled with my keys and whatnot and it only ever showed very fine scratches on the surface and it never chipped or flaked. For a while I was obsessed with the idea of TiN coating on guns and there are services where you can send gun parts in and get them coated. TiAlN is better though and less blingy.

But those golden anodized surplus mags are available by the bucket at any gun show worth a damn, was just surprised you hadn't seen them before

every now and then I have a slight desire to go full cartel special. so far I have my priorities straight

There's only one place near where I grew up that had buckets of surplus anything, and it was stacks of mausers and mosins up to the ceiling. I was too young to realize what I was looking at. Out of habit I ask to look in "parts bins" or "buckets of odds and ends" when I go to gun stores, but central FL is ripe with fuddery so selection is limited.

>>

I just buy them on the files. Ones in nice shape usually go for around $40 to $45 so I try and buy every one in nice shape that pops up for around $30 when I can afford it. The most I've paid for one in nice shape was $34 shipped and the cheapest was $26 shipped. The four I'm waiting on ran me $110 shipped. I've had two true blacks for a little over a year now and it wasn't until this past month or two that I started buying more. The four I'm waiting on will bring my true black count up to 12. I'm considering selling some black (10)s to buy more true blacks but that's a lot of work just for stamps and country of origin.

Ok and I guess I have one mas question. I already own an AR15. However, I am concerned about an AWB coming down sometime in the next few years. Do I buy an AK or FAL now?

Ultimately I want both, but my reasoning is that whichever I decide to buy second, may end up not being possible if an AWB comes too soon for my expendable cash to grow. I know you probably are biased, being in the AK thread; but because the AR and AK are both intermediate caliber rifles, should I get the FAL for now and cross my fingers on the AK? or am I worrying over nothing and just get the AK now.

buy the rifle you want the most. both can be quite fun. DSA makes FAL rifles domestically so they're likely to be around even if we have import bans (most likely to come first). they are around the same price point at this time, FAL food is more expensive but will be around long after an import ban whereas 5.45x39 may not be. lots to consider.

If you're worried about another AWB you're better off just not buying the second rifle and just dumping that money into mags and ammo. Remember, the new AWB will not have a sunset provision. Transfer of rifles and magazines will most likely be prohibited. What YOU have will be what you use until you die.

Yes but desu if an AWB comes down, both AKs and FALs will increase in value dramatically. I have no intention of selling any of my guns ever, I want to someday pass them down to my kids (if I have some). I'm simply talking about filling my collection before regulations make it too expensive.

I can hit a man size plate out at 300 all day with my AR using iron sights. I simply want an an AK because its a fucking AK. I want an FAL because it fills another category I want in my collection.

For instance:
target pistol
>ruger mark 3
CC pistol
>Kahr mk9
Full size pistol
>still need to buy one
Bolt action rifle
>R700 CDL .25-06
Lever action rifle
>Henry .30-30

Soo do I buy an AK because I want one, or make sure I have the battle rifle spot in my collection filled before getting a second assault gat.

I get what you're saying about the FAL though. I bought a ptr 91 even though I don't intend to shoot much .308. I just wanted one in the stable.

To make 20 inch groups...I have no idea.

Did you buy it new or used?
Can you or your friend get decent groups from other guns, or are you both new to guns? (first time shooters)

A VEPR is an RPK, not an SVD.

Your best bet for an SVD is a TIGR or Chinese NDM, both of which aren't as expensive as a legitimate SVD but still multiple thousand dollars.

pretty much that, i want something that looks like it and slings cheap 7.62

groups that bad would pretty much require a serious malfunction with the barrel. (e.g. it's melting, not seated in the receiver to the point where it wobbles, made out of latex, inner diameter too large, etc.)
GT is good ammo.

When you say "at bench" you mean you're supporting the front of the rifle, correct? You're not resting the barrel directly on anything, right?
Are you supporting the stock properly? Sometimes I fold my arm around and make a human monopod from my support hand.

>>

AKs already jumped up in price almost by double since the sandy hook happening. Used to be you could find them for around 400-500 and now 600 is bottom of the barrel CAI.

All I can say is do not do my mistake and sell your AK during a panic buy to try and make a profit. Don't do it. I am sitting on like 900 rounds of 5.45 I can't do fuck all with. I'd sell the P226 I bought from selling my AK for double what I paid but I know I'd regret that. But on the flipside it'd be a lot easier to (if an AWB followed the older model) just have a few magazines for the P226 and buy one or a 229 or 202 cheaper down the line. So still mulling over selling the p226 (60 rounds through it give or take, near NIB otherwise) and buying an AK74.

Oh I meant to add to that first sentence - far as I can tell the FAL hasn't jumped up much from its 900-1000 price pre hook. And I forget how much black scary ass salt AR was before hook but I feel like it's only AKs that really jumped up in price. So if you ask me I'd get an AK if I were you. I'm not anti-FAL as I literally am like you in wanting one too.

So I'd suggest you get an AK. Maybe look into how hard it is to build a FAL and if there are gunsmiths near you who could help you do so down the line. If so, maybe get the lower receiver for a FAL (if it's cheap) so you have peace of mind in future-proofing.

Don't have an exact quote yet since they haven't gotten around to my build yet but their build costs usually are $500-$600.

They're refinishing everything of course since as you can see from the pics the rifle the kit is from was obviously heavily used.
>>
>>31663734

>considers anything with a steel core or steel case "armor piercing"

They probably let people blast green tip there all the time. They just don't want people shooting steel case because they can't sell it to bulk reloaders and don't want to pay someone to sort it.
>>
>>31664657

Thanks for spoonfeeding me the answers. I was a bit delusional to think the build cost would be less than the parts, but from what I've seen Galils prebuilt go in the 1.5 to 2k range so you'd still make out with it. Look forward to the funs you'll have with bestgirl galil though.

Shit, I live in the south and the closest ranges are all indoors, though one does open up to rifles on Thursday and Friday. I shoot there most often just for fun. Closest outdoor range is 30 minutes away and is a fudd range (no "rapid fire" allowed) and as far as I can tell there's no BLM land in my state.

I'll probably end up joining a gun club because I just want to shoot outdoors without being bothered.

It's possible if the ATF is feeling nice. Read this from the ATF imports guidebook:
"ATF has determined that certain features designed for military application are
indicative of non-sporting rifles and shotguns. Features which are not recognized as
sporting include, but are not limited to, folding or telescoping stocks, pistol grips that
protrude conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon, a bayonet or bayonet mount, a
flash suppressor or threaded barrel designed to accommodate a flash suppressor, a
grenade launcher and night sights. These features as well as other information
concerning a particular firearm may result in ATF classifying a rifle or shotgun as nonsporting."

The keyword is "may".

What about barrels? Is there anything preventing someone from importing CHF CL barrels that haven't been populated by the thousands to use in domestic builds? I mean, since nobody in the US seems capable of picking up a fucking phone and telling the guys churning out AR barrels that they could lock down the made-in-USA AK market.

If DDI would actually listen to AK buyers and build an accurate clone of a 74m or 100 series gun with foreign barrels they'd sell enough to guys on akfiles alone to make it worth their time.

As long as your barrels are configured for "sporting" rifles. i.e. the same barrel profile that would be on an importable AK.

There is now one guy I know who bought a used CHF machine and is pumping some out, but he's backlogged for a long time.

I can get CHF 20 inch chambered blanks for like $70 and have been considering it as a venture on top of my normal imports, but I don't have the machine skills and competence to profile/thread them myself.

Not that great. 2 broken firing pins and 1 broken disconnector in less than 2k round.

Was older GALxx serial Golani. They use Century modified rebounding firing pins instead of free floating firing pins and the Century pins were made of pot metal or something.

Was overgassed as hell, casings were dented to shit and sometimes would rip pieces of the rim off (would still always extract though). Never ran any go/no-go gauges through it so dunno if it kept headspace or not.

That would require getting a smith to headspace the new bolt, and I didn't know if this Golani had a soft receiver like some of them did. Easier to sell it and get the real deal (almost)

I'm gonna make it more AKM ish with wood and bakelite and a slant brake. I eventually want a PKA Venezuala as well.
>>31667415
Bummer, I kinda want a Galil for less than $2500...
>>

They use ESS AK Barrels. They don't tell you that on the page because the ESS Barrels are butter soft.
