S&W 44 magnum Talo Deluxe loaded with 240 grain HP magnum loads...Is it overkill for CCW?
>>
>>31644625
>44 magnum
>Is it overkill for CCW?
Yes.
It's also going to be generally unpleasant to shoot on account of the frame size and wooden grips, not to mention it's going to be an expensive beast to feed if you actually intend to go to the range and shoot it a lot for practice, which obviously you should.

38/357, 9mm, or 45 is plenty enough for CCW, revolver or automatic.
I'm assuming this is one of your first pistols or at least CC guns and you have little experience in that department, if so then heed my advice and don't get caught up in the "bigger is better" cycle.
>>
>>31644671
no I ccw a ruger lcr .357
>>
>>31644625
>Is it overkill for CCW?
No, it is just a silly choice, unless you are more likely to defend yourself against bears than dindus.
>>
>>31644712
why is it a silly choice
>>
>>31644724
Limited capacity, harder for follow up shots, expensive to practice with, harder to conceal, still not a rifle/shotgun, slower to reload.

Unless your name is Jerry Miculek and you practice shooting hours a day, for years, it is a silly choice for a ccw handgun.
>>
>>31644757
but it is an awesome weapon
>>
>>31644690

That's a better choice than the .44 mag for a carry piece unless you need to shoot a Grizzly.
>>
>>31644784
no grizzlys here lol
>>
>>31644724

.44 Mag is designed for dealing with large woodland critters not muggers. A smaller round (.357 mag, .38 special, 9mm, .45 ACP, etc.) will be just as effective with less recoil.
>>
>>31644625
A Medium frame .357 would be a better choice. Smaller, lighter, easier to shoot by far-cheaper to practice with. The only reason to get the .44 is if you want to hunt with it.
>>
>>31644804
I know, but the gun is cool
>>
>>31644625
It's overkill for sure but you should totally get one. I don't know anything about this gun but if you can get a 3-4" version then that would be my choice. I feel like .44 mag is wasted on short barrels.
>>
>>31644774
>but it is an awesome weapon
It is. But just know I can carry nearly a hundred rounds of 9mm with a G26 pretty easy: 10 plus 1 loaded, two extra mags in a pocket or waist band and two happy sticks in a pants cargo pocket.
>>
>>31644625
You aren't walking around town with earplugs in. Be sure you're okay with the report sans ear protection.
>>
>>31644842
Just know that if you were carrying a .44 you wouldn't need that many rounds. Like, one or two. Nobody is going to watch their homie get his soul split in two and keep fighting. I'm pretty sure most criminals just throw down their weapons after seeing what one can do.
>>
>>31644813

Then get it in .357 magnum.
>>
>>31644889
>Just know that if you were carrying a .44 you wouldn't need that many rounds.

.44 mag isn't a lightning bolt from on high thrown by Zeus. And maybe you are the best pistol marksman in the world; I am not. I'll take carrying 97 rounds of +p 9mm over lugging around a heavy revolver that is harder to shoot fast and slower to reload.
>>
Hot specials would be better. Magnums are overkill, even from a short barrel.
>>
>>31644925

Honest question:

What plausible scenario do you see yourself in where you'd reload four times, two of those reloads being with EXTENDOS?

t. Guy that just carries a G17 without a spare mag, and sometimes maybe a J-Frame in the pocket.
>>
>>31644925
>maybe you are the best pistol marksman in the world
I am.

>.44 mag isn't a lightning bolt from on high thrown by Zeus
It really is though.

>heavy
Jeepers, maybe guns aren't for you. I hear there are some lightweight pepper spray containers with a built in tassel in case you drop it.

>harder
>slower
There you go again. I didn't know we were listening to the lease common denomination.

No.
but I cc'd a S&W 460 for a year and don't consider that overkill either.

I think he woke up in Baghdad with only his EDC. I really just want to know how many knives he has.
>>
>>31644986
>What plausible scenario do you see yourself in where you'd reload four times, two of those reloads being with EXTENDOS?

Honest answer. Pretty much never. I hope never, anyway. i do however work at a small town all in one shop that sells guns, gas, bait, hardware, food and deals with a lot of cash and tourists from the chicago region. I also close at night, and the only people in the store beside me that late are teen girls working the subway section of the store.

I pretty much have it and never have to use it; but with the use of opiates, meth and out of town tourists, I know shit could happen. I doubt it ever will; but a group of assholes could decide it was good idea to rob the store and I not going to die locked in a freezer with out shooting back- and I am never going to say I had enough ammo when doing so..
>>
>>31645027
>I really just want to know how many knives he has.
I just carry a benchfag griptilian in d2. I use it to cut open boxes and such. I don't have a hero fantasy. I just figure why not carry that amount of ammo if I can in comfort.
>>
>>31645042
>and I am never going to say I had enough ammo when doing so.
I don't want to offend you but maybe you need a bigger trenchcoat.
>>
>>31645096
>I don't want to offend you but maybe you need a bigger trenchcoat.

No worries. No offense taken. I am not a trench coat wearing weirdo. I am just a guy that goes to work. I carry that ammo comfortably throughout the day, on my feet, with no problems. So why not? I've been doing it for years and no one ever notices it of suspects I am carrying. Is it not better to have it and not need than need it and not have it?
>>
>>31644625
Just load it was .44 specials, should be nice.
>>
>>31645144
I bet it never even crossed your mind to fill one of those mag pouches with bandaids in case one of your coworkers gets a scrape or CC some tissues in case they feel a feel. It's a good thing bees are dying off because you don't have one epipen in your loadout.
>>
>>31645164
Stop it nutnfancy, i am not carrying a fanny pack.

I think he's saying that it might do you good to consider replacing some of your spare ammunition with something that is more likley to be used.

Portable first aid and small tools would legitimatley be good things to consider if you were looking to optimize your load-out. There are other things to consider as well, maybe things like a whistle, glass breaker, or a portable flashlight and a pocket mirror.

There's tons of small stuff that could end up being infinitely more useful in prolonging your life in a shit hits the fan than that one extra mag of fuck you.

Probably. If you CCW that beast either get some .44 special Speer 200 grain Gold Dots (The flying ashtray) or Speer's Gold Dot short barreled .44 Magnum load. is has a powder mix optimized to reduce flash and recoil and uses the .44 caliber 200 grain Gold Dot hollowpoint.

I have a similar gun, a "Classic" series that I picked up from a pawn shop a few years back for $400 bucks. It was unfired.

Honestly, I love this gun, but it seems like something more for a hero gun from a tv show or movie. It's cooler in theory than practice.

I could see carrying it, but would only use 44 specials (it's not bad recoil). However, even as a snubbie, it's still a bigger gun than a 19.

Would recommend, but more for fun and range toy.
>>
Even more so than with other snub revolver rounds, you lose most of the admittedly impressive ballistic potential of .44 mag when it's fired out of such a short barrel. In exchange, you get massive recoil, permanent hearing damage when used without ear protection, and a huge muzzle flash that is likely to impair your ability to make quick follow-up shots when used in dark conditions (ie when you are most likely to actually use your firearm).

You would have been better off with a steel .357 or alloy .38 special +p rated revolver with a 3 inch barrel, as both would be easier to shoot, cheaper to shoot, and still be able to pass the FBI penetration tests against 4 layers of denim.
>>
>>31645903
This, so much. A gun is important but unlikely to ever see use. On the other hand, I use my knife, multitool, and first aid gear with comparative regularity. Hell, last winter I had to break into my survival supplies (MRE, emergency water, etc.) When my car broke down in the middle of bumfuck nowhere and I couldn't get a tow for two days. Prepare for more than just a dindu with a gun, because in all likelihood that's the least of your worries.
>>
Slightly related, anybody know the best 158 grain round for a 4 inch .357 Magnum?
>>
>>31644625
Yes.
.357 mag is enough.
Get a Coonan compact.
>>
>>31648209
If you're not averse to 38 special, the .38 special 158 grain lead semi-wadcutter hollow point +P (aka LSWCHP +P) was the FBI standard loading for years and has a tried and proven track record of effective penetration and expansion when fired out of a 4 inch barrel.
>>
Can you conceal it well and shoot it comfortably and accurately? Do you know what rounds you would carry, and if so can you afford to shoot them enough to familiarise yourself with them? If you can, then great, go for it. You should carry the most effective firearm you can as long as you take into account what you can do yourself. There is a reason .32 has more one shot kills than a. 44 does, it fits better with what more can carry. It's down to you, just don't make the rest of us look bad because you want to be Dirty Harry. Be smart and realistic with what you use. If you can't land a single shot with a. 44, it's nobetter than the 9mm you left at home.
>>
>>31644813
Do you want to conceal carry a "cool" gun that sucks cock at defending you, or do you want to conceal carry a gun that's actually a good self-defense tool? People like you are why I hate fudd CCWers who want to carry grandpappy's old Makarov or some shit. You don't want to carry this gun because you're worried about safety, you want to carry it because you love guns so much that you want to have it close to you, like a small child clutching a blanket. Your CCW is a tool, grow the fuck up and get a good tool for the job.

645 grain lead cast hollow point 500 S&W Magnum.

>>31652212
Demo ranch dude is cool and all but kinda a sissy when it comes to recoil. Every time he pulls out his 500 magnum he goes on about how much he hates to shoot it. I have the same 8.375" smith model and it handles the recoil on "light" stuff like 350gr jacketed loads very well. 440gr and heavier bullets you will start to feel the recoil but its by no means painful or uncomfortable to shoot.. I currently load 8 different bullet types/weights. Most all of my loads run between 2,350 and 2,450ft/lbs of muzzle energy so they are all about on par with hot factory stuff. The 645gr hollow points and 715gr solids I load with 24.5gr W296 and they are a handful no doubt. I only shoot 2 or 3 of those each range session. I usually shoot 30 rounds full tilt magnum and 20 rounds light loads.
