Hi /k/, can you help me identify this round? I can't seem to find anything.
Here it is next to a 30-06.
Headstamp coming next.

>>31642872
just from size comparison it looks like a 45-70 but digging a little more I found this (scroll to the section where picrelated is)
http://www.accurateshooter.com/cartridge-guides/competition-cartridges/
so a 45-80-500 Sharpshooter? Maybe?
>>31642801
45-70 with a big ass 500ish gr bullet?
>>31642872
The 85 makes me think a 45-70 with a heavy ass bullet made in 1985.
If it was S A CORP it could've been by Savage. Can't find info on just S A, there's an "A" for the American Cartridge Company, and there's too many "S"s for a definitive answer (from Styer to Spandau, to Spain, to some unknown factory in France
>>31643077
Actually, a single 5 could mean a Remington factory in Bridgeport. So there's that. I'll keep my guess at 45-70
>>31643077
>>31643112
The mystery cartridge necks down slightly. A 45-70 doesn't do this, correct?
>>31643203
Really? It doesn't look necked down. 45-70 is not a heeled bullet if that's what you mean. Go get some calipers and get some measurements.
>>31643203
It has a slight taper, but no neck, I can't tell if ????cartridge has a neck or if that's just a crimp. I'm leaning towards 45-70 and that's just the crimp, but dunno.
>>31643234
It doesn't appear to be heeled bullet. Like I said, the neck down is very slight.
Looking for calipers now.
>>31643291
No, that is not a heeled bullet, I was just trying to figure out what you meant by neck, since i didn't see one. That would be a very slight neck, to the point that may be a reloaded round that was badly resized.
>>31643291
Looks like a .44-75 cartridge
its .30 carbine ammo.
>>31643314
Soooo my digital calipers' battery is dead.
Here is the rim diameter.
>>31643378
30 carbine isn't rimmed and isn't that big.
>>31643409
Bullet diameter and case length.
Rim diameter pretty much rules out the 45s and smaller. Guessing .50-90 sharps now.
>>31643340
It's not a .44-75 Ballard, .44-77 Remington has a more pronounced neck.
Bullet diameter.
Case length.
>>31643527
its 450 socom.
>>31643000
Yep. That was my first thought. But it is really close to a 44-77 Sharps.
>>31643628
Really close, but the neck doesn't seem right
>>31642801
looks like .455 webley pistol ammunition.
>>31643697
No way to long.
Oops...
It's empty. No powder?
>>31642801
44-77 sharps?
>>31643827
Alright, once fired 44-77 Remington then. That explains the malformed shoulder and neck.
>>31643845
my bad, looks like someone already said 44-77. still, it looks right, just like it's worn and wasn't resized correctly to begin with.
380 grain bullet
>>31643902
ok, pretty sold on it not being 45-70, unless bubba reloading gone bad wrong, leaning towards slightly jacked up 44-77 like these guys
>>31643849
>>31643888
Can we get base and shoulder measurements to try to confirm it's not some more esoteric buffalo blaster?
>>31644106
Shit man, the case was made in 85. Can't get too much more esoteric before you get into shit not being made anymore
>>31644152
lol, yeah, pretty sure we're in no longer made territory no matter what, but there were a shitload of blackpowder cartridges floating around.
>>31644207
Starline, Shiloh, and a few other places still make new 44-77 brass today.
>>31644234
Meant to post a pic with that
>>31644234
>>31644248
Cool, I saw a couple of those trying to run down the headstamp. Still can't find anything that seems right.
