Thinking about getting a Styer M9-A1 for open carry self defense. Can get it for $477 before shipping.

Any thoughts or experience with this firearm? It's designed by an ex Glock designer except it isn't shitty like big Glocks.

Can also get a .40sw version for the same price, but the capacity is 12+1 instead of 15+1 and the general personal distaste I have for .40sw
>>
>>31631779
Gun is awesome in every way except grip angle.
>>
PS: Another thing I like about Steyr is the general safety of the firearms like the locking system etc and the ergonomics. Can anyone attest that this is true for the M9-A1?
>>
>>31631788
Any thoughts on the .40sw v the 9mm?

9mm seems to be cheaper for general use rounds plus the increased capacity is an obvious plus for self defense I think.

The grip angle doesn't bother me as much. I'm a quick adjuster with most guns I handle.
>>
>>31631795
Locking systems like that are retarded and you should feel bad.

Look here's what the Steyr has going for it:
>fully supported chamber
>strong barrel
>low bore axis
>precise full rails
>That special snowflake feeling.

Everything about the gun is designed around and for hand loaders and people wanting to shoot full power loads. That's it's thing. When they first came out they were having issues cycling light target loads, not sure if that's still the case but it wasn't a flaw. It's because the guns are built around shooting high pressure rounds, thus the fully supported chamber etc and also that extremely forward leaning grip.
That forward lean grip is meant to minimize recoil and muzzle rise by helping to "lock up" your wrist. The problem is that it's different than the grip angles on all the other guns and it really fucks up any point shooting you might do, especially if you're trained on other platforms. The gun wants to naturally point high.
I've almost bought one several times and even now at this instant I consider it but that grip angle is just too much of a deal breaker for me.

Neat gun though.

>>31631828
Unless you're hand loading, go with 9mm. The only difference between factory .40 and factory 9 is that you'll pay more for target practice with the .40.

Thanks for the insight.

The extraction and cycling was a huge issue in the 1st generation and slightly less so for the 2nd generation. There have been two more generations since then and every review I can find says 400+ rounds before a single issue with those generations.

I personally am going with a gen 3 if I get it because it has a chambered indicator on the back of the slide and because it has a stronger pin.

>>31631897
This clarifies exactly what I was trying to figure out, thanks. If I get it I am going with the 9mm as I do not hand load.
>>
>>31631975
He already has an extra chromosome, that image doesn't make sense. He should be holding a sign that says, "free chromosome" or "Don't let an extra chromosome get you down"
>>
>>31631779
I have the S9, it's pleasant to shoot and I love the sights and trigger. Something to keep in mind (at least with the S model, it may not be true on the fullsize) is that the slide doesn't like to be slingshotted, try to always use the slide release to chamber a round. Other than that it's pretty neat.
>>
I carry one in 9mm.

My only complaint is that it often ejects casings at my head.

I like to think it's just being polite and helping me pick up brass, but it burns sometimes.
>>
>>31631828
Get 9mm.

.40 doesn't really have any benefit ballistics wise with modern ammo, but had the drawbacks of lower capacity, higher pressure, worse recoil, and more expensive ammo.
>>
I had one subject to recall.

Steyr sent me new parts. I installled them.

Gun continued to be a malfunctioning POS. I sold it to a neckbeard, threw away my fedora and bought a Glock 17.

the implication is that since he has one, he desires all the extra chromosomes, and is willing to resort to violence for it. His violent desire for extra chromosomes to horde, on top of his existing, is the humor.

It is an absurdist type of humor. Very prevalent in the late 80s-early 2000s, influencing a generation, particularly in the US.

And now you understand.

what's uncivilized about the Glock?

They actually found that in most defensive shootings/police shootings people tend to shoot low and left, so that might actually be a very good thing. I'm still looking for one of these to try.

I like my S9. Mags are a pain to find as compared to other wonder 9s. The aftermarket is kinda shitty as compared to everything. Holsters have to be custom (i made mine myself out of kydex)

Other than that

Alright so I came back and read everything in the thread. Lots of good information here. Did some more research and I am now considering the L9-A1 as well.

Pros:
Longer barrel (4.75in v 3.75in)
Shipped with two +cap mags (17r v 15r)
Massively reduced extractor issues reported.
Easier to find and get to my local FFL
Made much more recently (2012-2014)

Cons:
About $100 more
Still picky and likes eating P+ or P++ ammo
Longer barrel means harder to find holster that isn't custom made or tailored
Still uses a plastic guide rod

Any input?

Isn't that supposed to be the selling point?

WHERE THE FUCK IS THE 10MM MODEL
>>
>>31637064
Found when shooting, it likes 9mm NATO
>>
>>31637203
Good question, I don't think they have a. 45 frameand slide so they would have to retool and get new molds and all that expensive stuff but yeah, it'd make a great 10mm.
>>
>>31631779
Literally every one I've shot or seen had issues with feeding and ejecting. One out of seven I've shot got through a mag without a failure.
>>
>>31637979
And yet they have the goofy 357 sig version.

You wouldn't happen to have any good sources on 9m nato would you?
>>
>>31638021
9mm, .40cal and .357sig all use the same frame and basically the same slide so it's very minimal effort to have all 3.
>>
>>31639686
And unlike the Glock the Steyr design started from .40 and scaled down to 9, instead of the other way around.

Try it at the range first, it might be a dealbreaker for you too like this guy.

>>31637064
> Newer production
Go for this if you can. Avoid all but the latest ones like the plague. It wasn't a bad design, but it had issues and it's hard to find the newer ones sometimes. There was that flood of frankenstein models conglomerated from newer and older parts AND recall replacement parts which made it into the US for some reason.

The trigger, frame, fit and finish of the gun are really good but the striker design is really moronic. I broke 2 strikers within 300 rounds. They are really fragile thin MIM parts.

Did not expect that. So, were you dry firing it? It should be okay to dry fire any striker fired gun but could that be the problem with this one that you had?

Thanks but they're not mine. I just thought it was a good image for showing the grip angle. I really do think HK has the best most "pointable" grip angle though. I really need to go actually shoot a steyr though, I've played around finger fucking it and bringing up to the quick ready but I wonder how it would do dumping a mag vs. some others, maybe better, idk. Maybe I'll go buy one in the morning, probably not but maybe.
>>
>>31631779
Perfect in every way. Buy it.

I don't trust key locking systems. I know on Taurus pistols they can lock themselves while firing and good finding a gunsmith that will disable a safety for you.
>>
>>31643062
It's spring loaded. It's impossible for it to self-lock.

>>31643062

It's also the takedown lever.
