Don't aim for the head. yes, go for the lungs/ heart.

VZ is fine provided you know how to shoot with it. don't use FMJs, use softpoints.

Yes, 7.62x39mm should be pretty appropriate for deer, and your average VZ58 should be able to cut the mustard. If yours is a 5.56x45mm rifle, that can work too, but I'd look for the most fitting hunting ammo online.

That said, there are rail and side-mounts for fitting optics, which you could do for well under $500. Pic related is a specialized hunting model, but it's just to illustrate that a scope could be put on your VZ

If you're worried about appearances, order a 5 or 10 round magazine.

Yes, a good and clean shot involves hitting one or both lungs, as well as possibly the heart if you can.

If you manage to hit all three in one shot, that's an excellent and clean hit, but focus on the lungs mainly.

I wouldn't do that personally, at a forward angle, bullets are known to deflect off of animal skulls such as those of deer (being thick and angled), at which point you have an injured and panicked animal.

I wouldn't really want to do it at any other angle either if I could choose, too many ways for it to go wrong.

SC doesn't seem to have a magazine limit on you for hunting, so you should be fine, though some fudd might give you funny looks for showing up with a 'military rifle' with a long magazine.

Given that the Vz can be loaded from the breech, you could simply bring one magazine in the gun, and then reload the rifle with clips or individual rounds, could conceivably be less bulk. Or you could look online for a pair of 10 round magazines, they'd look less conspicuous, while allowing you to get down low on the ground easier (30 round 7.62mm magazines have a tall profile, as I'm sure you are aware). Again though, nothing stops you from bringing assault clipazines.

As for accuracy, most deer engagements happen at 100 to 150 yards, so if you can score a passable grouping at those distances (not too hard for an experienced rifleman as yourself), then you should be golden.

Don't be afraid to wear a bright orange vest or cap, deer's vision is based on movement (and they're colorblind), so to be undetected, you stand still. The bright orange would make you easier to spot from a distance by other hunters.

There's no reason you cant hit a deer at normal hunting ranges with vz irons. My 13.5" steel @400y doesn't even feel like that much of an accomplishment using irons. At half the range or less, it'd be cake to hit an area the size of deer vitals.

I'd do that anyway in his situation. And buy a pouch to hold the 2nd 10rd mag and a few strippers.
Unlike carrying 4 30rd mags on a belt, this is actually 100% comfortable and not annoyingly big or heavy.

Thanks alot guys! Sorry for asking any stupid questions, I just couldnt find anything on the mag limit in my state. The area i'll be hunting in has an abundance of coyotes and wild hog too, so I might just keep the 30 in, i'll eventually grab some smaller ones though

Sorry, another reply, how do I tell if it is a soft point bullet? Will it say so on the box? I usually only pay attention to caliber (obviously), and the grain of the bullet. I feel stupid.
