Portugal has been in a 700 year alliance with Britain and Spain is still extremely butthurt that the soviets stole their gold and never gave it back.

The straight of Gibraltar is a choke point, had the Russians decided they wanted to control it, they probably could have. Spain and Portugal couldn't have done much. So, by joining NATO they gained a lot more dwterrance to keep the straight open.

Spain in NATO is very stupid. We have three possible enemies: France, UK (for Gibraltar) or Morocco. The two first are in NATO and they are more important members; if we fight the NATO will go against us. Moroccan issue is more shaming; USA forbide the use of american weapon against moors (In war of Ifni, last Franco reign, we must use Ju-52 planes for WW2) and Ceuta and Melilla (two spaniard cities in north Africa) are gone of the threaty. If Morocco attack our territory, NATO don't help us.

Sorry muricans, but as ally for Spain your gov is crap. If a patriot government rule Spain (very low chance) we will go out of NATO.
