I would go with the sks. Very fun to shoot and the price of them will never go down so the best time to buy is now. Shotgun prices will always stay the same.

I picked up a Steven's 320 yesterday. This is the first shotgun I've ever owned. What's the deal with rifled barrels in relation to their ability to fire slugs?

Can I shoot slugs out of a smooth barrel? I don't know if the rifling is just to make it more accurate or or it's necessary to safely shoot slugs. Any other insight is absolutely welcome. Thanks

SKS if you can buy it sub-$250. Any higher and you're getting ripped off.

I love my SKS and my Mav. 88. My Mav is my main skeet gun, operates just fine. My Mossy 500 is the home defense shotgun though. Literally the only difference between the two (I've stripped both hundreds of times) is your safety design (Mav 88 is simpler which might not be such a bad thing) and the finish on the 88 is just a hair not as well done. Nothing your own blueing kit, a blueing marker, etc. couldn't fix.

Rifled barrels technically shoot slugs not accurately at longer ranges.

Personally, I do everything through smooth bores. Works for me.

Rifling is for slugs that use a sabot.

A popular misconception is that rifled slugs are made to rotate in the air. This is untrue. The rifling is actually so that it can swage itself through a choke. You'll actually get better performance with a rifled slug out of an improved cylinder over a cylinder bore.

I wouldn't recommend a full choke, though.
