Colt Single-Action Army, most likely in .45 LC.
The "patina" (AKA mild dark rust) indicates that it might be an original period-correct example. I see a "U.S." marking on the frame, which could indicate original US Govt./Military use.

Values on original Colt SAAs from the 1800s run from thousands to tens of thousands. There's a lot of money on your hand and it's definitely worth your time to get it authenticated and appraised. Colt runs a program where you submit the serial number and they will send you a certificate with the date of manufacture and whatever info they have on it. Don't worry about it being "stolen US property", if that were the case it's so old that's not an issue anymore.

Whatever you do, DO NOT attempt to "clean up" the gun. Restoration on antique firearms is a very careful process that can do more harm to the value than good. It looks functional, and the patina only adds to the authenticity and history of the piece.

Story and more pics anon. That looks to be an all original 1st generation 1873 Colt Single Action Army. I don't think it's an army issue at that barrel length.
>>
>>31607972
It's possible the barrel was cut after it was surplussed out, or that the "U.S." stamping is fake, checking the serial number will tell more.
>>
>>31607972
What photos would help?

The D.F.C. mark is not factory. Probably a police dept or some private entity security service. What do you know about it's history?
>>
>>31608263
Nope DFC is a government inspectors mark. Anon has a martial pistol.

Please tell me you can see the DFC initials on the wooden grips too.

it says d.f.c on the cylinder

In a square stamped towards the bottom centered on the side of the grip panels. If it's there, they are original grips and that is really unusual.

no markings on the wood at all from what i can see.
>>
>>31608595
No big deal. Worn off or replaced grips. Original wood grips on a 130 year old revolver would be icing on your nice little cake.
>>
If it's a legit 19th century piece, then for the love of God anon, don't try and clean it or 'restore' it. Get it checked out by a professional.
>>
how the fuck am i supposed to store something like this?
>>
>>31608653
As long as you don't do anything to it it should be fine in a dry location until you can have it looked at.
>>
>>31608653
As if it were worth it's weight in gold.
Unlike gold however it can rust (like actual serious rust, not patina), so keep that in mind. Lock box and some silica gel packets perhaps?
Don't use foam-lined cases. They attract and retain moisture which can cause rust in long term storage.
>>
>>31608653
I would put it in a bank safe deposit box anon. It is seriously worth north of five grand, closer to ten.
>>
>>31608653

Pick up something called Ballistol and learn how to clean/oil it. Keep it locked up somewhere nice in a room that is a temperature and humidity level that would be comfortable for you.
>>
>>31608713
okay thanks i have it in a foam case now i think i will just get a lock box with felt or something
>>
Someone brings up a mud test or best battle rifle and /k/ can't stop flinging it's shit.

Some anon inherits a piece of history and suddenly /k/ is wearing waist coats and drinking brandy out of a sniffer.
