What's a good self-defense round to load my AR-15 with? I heard PMC's M855 is pretty good but I'm not totally sure what to get

I would probably get american eagle's 193, since the M855 over-penetrates anyways.

Depends what you want to do.
If you're concerned about somebody wearing body armor or hiding behind walls then military loads like M193 are good, since they penetrate and then yaw/fragment.
If you want to minimize over-penetration then there are better loads, this article goes into more detail than I can.

Basically, fancier, more expensive ammo that fragments more reliably in order to minimize collateral damage. Mostly SP and HP variety.

Is there such a thing as 5.56 JHP?

Yes. https://www.ammunitiondepot.com/393-hornady-5-56-nato-75-grain-bthp.html

Why should one be comcerned with overpenetr8tion?
>>
All of the following are top performing barrier blind loads:

Speer Gold Dot 55 gr and 75gr

Federal Fusion MSR 62gr (identical to the Speer Gold Dot 62gr)

Hornady TAP GMX

This, although I think any of the Hornady TAP would work.

I also want to know how a 75gr bonded spire point bullet works on hogs.
>>

Some TAP is more betterer.

The TAP FPD and related 55gr V-max loads are shit for anything other than varmint hunting. Not enough crush and not enough penetration to hit vitals.

62gr TAP Barrier JSP and 75gr TAP T2 BTHP are solid, but not as solid as TAP GMX when it comes to shooting through intermediate barriers.

GMX was a big step for Hornady towards making their load perform as well as the Speer / Federal loads.

For the convenience though, Federal Fusion MSR 62gr can be found almost anywhere online, local or big box retailer. Plus, every now and then, Palmetto State will drop the cost to $10/box for a sale. At that price it can not be beat for stocking up a true defensive load.
