"They're P-51s, sir. Tankbusters"

What did he mean by this?
>>
He was referring to the .45 anti tank bullet that Captain Miller had cleverly left in the magazine just incase the squad faced any T-34s cleverly disguised as Tigers
>>
Jesus Christ. Liquid cooled P-51s were way too fragile for ground attack. Jugs and typhoons all the way
>>

Man, the more I think about SPR after all these years the more pissed off it makes me.

Only good thing about it was the Omaha landing tbqh.

You didn't know? Every tiger is equipped with a self destruct mechanism that's triggered by .45 fire

"if the tiger is close enough to be shot at by pistols, the crew fucked up and deserve to die to make sure a tiger doesn't fall into enemy hands" - Heinz Guderian 1943

movie is presented as a flashback but it's just telling a story Ryan wouldn't know
Upton has a serious moral dilemma about killing a prisoner of war, that's interesting
but end of the film his "redemption" is killing that prisoner because he's a nazi

Yep, cause vets never ever under any circumstances talk to each other and the rest of the crew wouldn't tell him why everyone died in the first place right.

Plenty of shit wrong with the movie but come on
>>
>>31605769
technically it was a fighter/fighter-bomber, but calling them tank busters is a bit far

P 51s are overrated as fuck.
P38s and 47s are where it's at.
P 51s were shit for ground attack and mainly useful escorting bombers because of their range.
>>
>>31605851
That was a thing late in the war. I believe the brits did it first with the typhoon. Later Americans did with P51s, Hellcats, and P38s.
They were unguided, usually firing two at a time.
Very useful for close air support.

Paul Fussell, veteran of WWII, complained about "the way Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan, after an honest, harrowing, 15-minute opening visualizing details of the unbearable bloody mess at Omaha Beach, degenerated into a harmless, uncritical patriotic performance apparently designed to thrill 12-year-old boys during the summer bad-film season. Its genre was pure cowboys and Indians, with the virtuous cowboys of course victorious." In one of his books (The Boy's Crusade, I think) he says the first 15 minutes should be turned into a short film entitled "Omaha Beach: Aren't You Glad You Weren't There?" and the rest tossed into the trash where young-adult adventures go to die.

I tend to agree. They couldn't even get Wermacht haircuts right.
>>
>>31606765
>Upton has a serious moral dilemma about killing a prisoner of war, that's interesting
>but end of the film his "redemption" is killing that prisoner because he's a nazi
Not because he was a Nazi, because he killed other American soldiers after they let him go after agreeing he would surrender to another group of Americans
>>
>>31606765
Interesting thing that I saw a video about and noticed when I rewatched SPR is that the action becomes less realistic as the movie goes on. So first you see the screaming guys with their guts out but a few minutes later you see soldiers die instantly after getting shot.
>>
>>31606584
The Hawker Hurricane was a prewar design half made of fabric and wire. The Typhoon was an advanced all aluminum fighter put in service around 1943.

We aren't literally talking about storma.

Saving Private Ryan was a pile of dogshit and you have to look no further then Steamboat Willie to see why it is so.

Imagine you're Willie. You and your squad are minding your own fucking business defending a damaged radio array when Captain AIDS and his merry band of fuckwits come along for no reason other then the Germans are there. You aren't spoiling for a fight, you are just sitting there defending a sector. The Americans can go around you and you will not pursue them. But no, Captain Big needs to fight because you're there.

So the battle is over and Captain Gump and his Fuckwits with nearly unlimited plot armor have killed all your friends, but because a Medic who should have been left behind with the typist, got his ass killed, you are subjected to physical assault, forced labour and eventual execution.

Eventually Captain Woody decides to spare your life and you are left alone to stumble your way back to your lines. You get picked up by a bunch of Waffen-SS men who are planning an attack on some bridge. What are you going to say to Ideological oriented soldiers: "No way I promised the Americans I wouldn't do anything." They'd laugh their asses off and find some rope because that's fucking treason, and they would be totally in the right to do it too.

So there you are, counter attacking against the Americans and suddenly you see fucking Captain Castaway and his fuckwits, who tortured you, humiliated you, threatened to kill you for no good fucking reason. So you put Captain Phillips in your iron sight and shoot him down like the asshole deserves.

After the battle you get held up by the typist coward and recall his name. He proceeds to shoot you like its justified and lets the rest of the squad go.

This movie was shit.

Two guys shoot surrendering Germans in the D-Day scene. I don't think they were playing it up as justified in either case.
>>
>>31606243
sweet pic
>>
>>31607605
It was half fabric covered over aluminum structure and did quite most of the work during the battle over britain, because there were more of them and they were plenty fast enough to down german bombers
>>
Technically there was a dive bombing ground attack version of the p-51, the a-36 apache, but I'm not sure it was still in use during d day
>>
>>31607741

It's a totally different dude. Different actors and everything.

>>31607826

Those guys were actually conscripted Czech pressed into service. They say something like "Please do not shoot! I did not kill anyone! I am Czech!"

If you understand what they're saying it adds another level of horror to the war.
>>
>>31608433
Nope he shot Captain Miller and Upham saw it. The other actor was the guy who stabbed Mellish.

>>
>>31607640
What? That makes no sense.

Saving Private Ryan isn't supposed to be a end all be all account of the second world war, it's just an action film set in WWII. If you want a more non-fiction account of Normandy maybe watch Band of Brothers.
>>
>>31612074

He's saying that the big guy who killed Mellish is not the same guy who was Steamboat Willie..
>>
>>31612139

>>
Ryan is a dick

If he just went home Captin, Sarge and everyone else would be alive

So what if the Gnatsies capture the bridge? They will be wiped out by the Allies
>>
>>31612139

Also, all this confusion would be fixed if Spielberg didn't insist on having every German extra shave their heads like criminals, when they were reenactors who came in with historically accurate hair styles.

Under the laws of war if you are paroled as a prisoner of war, which is technically what happened to Steamboat Willy, you are committing war crime if you participate in further hostilities.

But, if you want to just have no idea what you're talking about that's cool too I guess.
>>
>>31606765
Well, it's an american jewish film about the good american jewish fight against the evil german goy nazis. Did you really expect that kind of film having any semblance of realism? The beginning was also typically Spielberg, throw in some cruelty for simulated "authenticity".
>>
Funny thing is Spielberg is self-proclaimed WWII enthusiast and expert.

At least he didn't go full 6 gorillion until band of brothers.
>>
>>31605769
