BACKUP iron sights don't fucking matter. As long as you are able to use them to aim after your primary sight becomes unusable, and don't fall off the gun when you shoot, they're fucking fine.

If the pieces of metal or plastic don't move around, and keep a decent zero, they're fine.

If you hot glued on a thumb tack and bulldog clip to your barrel, and it held up well and you figured out how to aim with them, they're good backup sights.

They do have to be facing the same direction to line up. It's simply a side effect of mass production. You won't find sights that line up if you place them on an AR backwards. I've tried this with KAC and Matech rears and a MagPul set.

When they started issuing those things in like late 2011/early 2012, I was was my company's(regular infantry line company, about 250 m4+m16) armory custodian.

The dumbfuck armorers decided that, in order to prevent theft, they would loctite the screw, and then intentionally strip it.

While this worked as intended, they quickly realized that they had fucked up- every time a rifle needed to be sent to a higher level of maintenance, they had to take the iron sights off- the maint units wouldn't accept them with them on. so they spent a couple hours every day unfucking their handiwork for the next few months, while i laughed at them.
