I have enough to buy a cheap prebuilt AR (first AR btw) at my local store for around $650.

I had been hammered time and time again to build an AR but only have around 1700 to my name until next week.

Yep. It was designed specifically around 14.5" 5.56 barrels and works very well on AR's <20".

Other calibers or on longer barrels it comes up a bit short. I really don't understand why their 5/8"x24 version, which they had to completely re-engineer anyway, isn't a little different in design to work better on bigger-bore calibers.

Throwing another wrinkle into the question, given the response:

Cheap ass S&W M&P Sport II rifles have better bbls than your average Colt LE edition, given they're Melonite and not chrome lined.

Theory:

You can buy a cheap AR, like the aforementioned M&P Sport II, or an American Eagle, and spend less money making it into a decent firearm, than rolling your own upper and lower from some designer shop.

Why am I wrong?
