Newer model aks have nice features, however. The stocks are much improved in shape and functionality with good folding options like the triangle stocks. I like the gas-block-frontsight combo piece for a bit of weight savings. There are also smaller caliber options for the ak that are similar to 5.56 (and likewise with larger caliber options for the ar-15). Accuracy wise will depend on build/manufacture quality, weight of barrel, optics mounting methods, etc. Both can make perfectly acceptable groupings with practical accuracy. Drop-in parts really only matter to the aftermarket.

the reason AK's have a notch there is so that the forward end of the stock is skinny enough to fit into the receiver, while the rear is large enough to be shouldered properly.

So the notch is actually a byproduct of making the rest of the stock bigger, it's not a case of making that particular part of the stock small.

As for the straight stock VS angled stock thing, well, the AK's sights are much lower. You need to have your head lower to look down them. Hence the angled stock, which allows you to do this. An AR15's sights are very high up by comparison, because the rifles requires a straight stock so that the BCG can recoil into it. The AK's stock is just a piece of wood.

But you'd know this if you had ever held either of these rifles even once in your life.

The AK is superior in firepower and is built for real engagements. Yeah the M-16 is more accurate at long ranges but most modern engagements are between 100 and 300 meters. The exact range the AK-47 is built for. The fact that you think the military uses standard 55.6 and 7.62 shows that you know nothing. Modern military issued 55.6 and 7.62 have copper jackets and copper penetrators as well a heavier load. They are the same weight as 7.62x39 if not heavier. Secondly the scar series of rifles which lets face it is vastly superior than the M4/M16(which all combat battalions have been outfitted with M4s) copy aspects of the AK.

Now then, as for your picture, I am assuming you are not familiar with manufacturing processes. The shape of an injection molded plastic stock doesn't matter one bit. You could just as easily put a notch in there, although designing the stock to still fit around the buffer tube would be a hassle. Meanwhile, if you are making stocks out of wood,(in the 1940's) one of two things is true:

Either you have
1) A large workforce of stockmakers who have years of practice making stocks with the notch already in it
or
2)Automated equipment where it doesn't really matter.

Since the AK does not have a buffer tube, the notch in the stock, while useless, does not detract from the function of the weapon.
