I want to buy a (fully working) M1 Garand.

People advise me to not buy one and 1 person told me he'd destroy me for "wanting to fuck with legendary historic weaponry".

Please explain to me why people flip their shit when an M1 Garand is mentioned.
>>
>>31548979
What? Just pull out $2000 and buy a Garand.
>>
>>31548995
>$2,000
CMP sells service grades for $630
>>
M1s are weird.
If you buy a k98, refinish & sand it, you would destroy its value.

If you do the same to a m1, you increased its value.
This is because of the AR fags that buy a M1 because of Band of Brothers.

I'm a historical purist. I like dings and scratches. So it's cheaper for me.

They're awesome rifles, you won't regret it. Owning a shooting one is a great way to learn a bit more about american military history. You're not "Fucking with legendary historic weaponry". Just don't fudd the thing up and enjoy

Thanks Bill Clinton.

That's what it looks like. Do they have more in the store that they don't list on the website, or does the CMP look like a Venezuelan grocery store in person?

I really like how some of them turn out and don't necessarily see anything wrong with it.

Yeah, you might not see anything wrong with it, but on the off chance that you manage to procreate, you'll be known as "that guy" who trashed a family relic.
>>
>>31548979
They're not the most practical rifle today, obviously (heavy and clunky), but they're very cool and nice pieces of history.

Replace the original plug with an adjustable one and you can shoot pretty much any modern commercial ammo without issue (whereas with the original plug, modern pressure ammo can sometimes blow the oprod to all fuck)

>>31549180
You could get a very similar look on a new Mini-14 or Springfield M14 variant by sticking with a 10rd magazine then giving it a similar stock and polish.

Or you could try and find an actual old professionally sporterized Garand rifle.
The other option is if you find one that's been raped and hacked up by bubba, then trying to restore that, or rebuild it to that sporterized style, which is more dignified than the hacksaw look.
>>
>>31549168
I think they're catching up on back orders. Then they're gonna either raise prices or remain sold out for the foreseeable future.
>>
Thanks for the info everyone.

I was going to buy one anyways, but I found it weird some people acted this way when I said I wanted to get one.

1. Pick up grandpappy's M1
2. Insert empty enbloc clip
3. Insert single round of M2 ball into rifle
4. Charge M1
5. Deep throat muzzle
6. Place left thumb on the trigger
7. Squeeze trigger
8. Die as you hear the glorious ping as your grandpappy's garand kills your dumbass for so much as thinking that you want to bubba it.

Depends on the cartouches. Unmolested one have ridiculous prices.

Old stocks also tend to fit much better than current ones outside some custom jobs. Boyds is the most common but they're fat and ugly in all th wrong places. They work, but they're ugly.

CMP sets are probably the most idea, but they cost whatever the current price at cmp is now.

I just bought a SA re-arsenaled stock set for 170. shits so dirty, i can't wait to clean her.

I assume CMP atleast fits them to some extent? I've never handled one, but I've never heard complaints about them. But fresh Boyd stocks are usually too large, and need extra fitting.

Mine is so fat theres a ledge running under the both sides of the handguard, which funny enough is also Boyds

>>
>>31550641

I don't believe they fit them at the CMP. That would require quite a bit of labor to custom fit each stock to an individual rifle. They might have the stocks worked over a bit more by Boyds before they deliver them to the CMP but I've never noticed any substantial tool marks on the "rub" spots on my CMP stocks
>>
>>31550432
that's what I did with mine, when the cmp sold receivers awhile back. the cmp will install the barrel and headspace for like 75 to 85 bucks.

At my buddies house firing our guns. I got my double barrel shotgun, My friend has a Mosin Nagant and the other just got a M1 for like $1500.

Acts like he is hot shit for blowing 4 weeks of pay on an M1 "Muh murican engineering"
"Hey, lets give that fancy gun a try then!"
He agrees and even loads up the gun for us acting all cool "Its gonna put your guns to shame"
I walk over to the range and pull the trigger, nothing happens
"Is the safety on or something?" nope
Bullet wont fire and I couldnt even open the chamber all the way. fucking jammed before I could even fire a round
Me and my friend laugh our asses off and go back to shooting our guns while the other spends almost the whole time taking the Garand apart and getting the jam out.
Jammed up again after he got it fixed a little while later.

Cant say I feel very favorable towards the M1 Garand these days. Neither does my friend.

Rub a few coats of pure tung oil into that stock and by the time it comes for you to pass it to your kids, it will really be something to look at. The fats in the tung oil and linseed oil oxidizing naturally over decades of time is what gives a stock that beautiful reddish, brown look
>>
>>31550784
How hard is installing the barrel on a Garand? I'm sure you have to buy a load of headspace gauges, but Reading about AK rivets and G3 and even possible cutting of FAL barrels to fit the threading sort of puts me off due to tools needed.
>>
>>31550345
I put an order in on sept 6. Am i fucked or are they just playing catch up?
>>
>>31550904

The email said that they will accept orders post marked before Sept. 28th I believe. youre good
>>
>>31550893

Yeah, I was going to say you might have something really rare on your hands lol. they only made like 500 rifles in 1953 in a trial run before getting into full fledged production on 1954.
>>
>>31550919
Awesome. just waiting for them to actually get to my order then.
>>
>>31550900
noted.
Can't wait to actually shoot it this weekend. Already swapped in a ported gas plug.
>>
>>31550943

It might be a while still. The dope on SG orders is that it's about a 6 month wait. You probably wont be seeing any movement beyond a confirmation email before the new year unless they happen to pop open a bunch of rifles in SG condition that are good to go as is.
>>
>>31550902
this guy has a series for barrel install and headspacing for the m14, but I would figure it would be the same amount of tools. https://youtu.be/zGKxuN2Pees
>>
>>31550904
My order was received on Sep 2, just before the crazy Labor Day stall. I got a process number last week. Just got the gun this morning. So I'd say you'll probably get a correspondence in a week.
>>
>>31550961

Glad to hear you took additional preventative measures to preserve your piece of history. Although, a new gas plug is not always needed for modern ammo. Anything under 150gr is usually alright in Garands. the Privi 30-06 ball ammo was specifically made to be used in Garands along with some other misc. ammo brands

>>
>>31551027
I hope so. Ive been checking my email daily. Even called them to see about it, and they just told me they hadnt gotten to september yet
>>
>>31549181
If you do this you have to make a big deal about it being some rare piece given to you by your father on his deathbed or some nonsense
>>
>>31551052

They didn't keep track of the monthly production numbers like in WWII. Usually for HRA's any 4 million serial range rifles were made in 1954 and anything in the 5 million range was made in 1955-56. They also had a very short run of 400 rifles at the very end of Garand production in 1956 in the 6 million serial range to clean the house of all the leftover parts.
>>
>>31551039
well, there isn't a "real" official thorough test out there on how well a ported plug is other than the guy over at Garand Gear and his argument (and measurements) that it's namely keeping the initial spike of gas pressure low and op rod greased up and not obstructed.
I just find having to adjust a small screw everytime I shoot a new load with the schuster a bit overkill.
>>
>>31549728

This
>>
>>31551561
Just looks like Timbersmith bullshit to me
>>
Why did nuggets jump in price to $300 recently?
>>
>>31551962
Because its the LAST CRATE!!!!!!! Basically people trying to turn a buck and hike up prices under the guise of depleting supply. It usually happens once a year or so, but that was back before they crested $200. Them jumping to $300 is probably due to an influx of new buyers in the gun market naive enough to pay that outrageous of a price for the gun and continuing to pay that much keeping the price that high.
>>
i got one 3 years ago at the cmp if your within range of one of there stores deff go there and get one
>>
>>31549065
I've actually got a question abojt that. If I bought say, a k31. I sand it and steam all the dings up, restain it that weird bright irwnge and shellac the finish back on. Is that something generally frowned upon? Like, would I get looks or words even if i took it to the range? I don't wamt to destroy a part of histroy but I do want a nice looking old gun.
>>
>>31551962
Supply has gone down, demand has gone up. Basic economics.
>>
>>31552774
Only one of those elements needs to move to increase price
>>
>>31552733
Yes it's bad, and it will lower the value of your rifle
>>
>>31550587

>>
>>31553479

>>
>>31552733
In the end, it's all about how much someone would pay. And who that someone is and how much they are willing to pay for the condition of the gun will be varied.
You might get someone who is into all the battle scars and all about authenticity of untouched guns.
Or you might get someone who isn't as anal about the details so long as the gun isn't desecrated.

you're a fucking idiot (im not even OP)
>>
>>31549483

I disagree with this. What is "practical"?

It's a rifle that can command an area with a 1km radius.

There are penalties for that, mainly weight but, it's representative of a idea/time before cheap became normal.
>>
>>31554195
I didn't put it there, definitely not original.

Don't worry, I have a usgi front sight on order.
>>
>>31554549
Did you at least get it cheaper?

Is the receiver fucked from the mongoloids attempt at tapping it, or is it mounted some other way?

I'm the kind of person that prefers old rifles to keep their original shit, but i'm not against people sanding/refinishing their rifle to make it look nice and smooth/clean, so long as it's done tastefully (no MLP shit over an original stock).

So... Will the CMP have more service grades or did I miss out yet again? Seems like every time they open up orders I miss out on it by a few days. Is there a way to get an email whenever they get something in stock?
>>
>>31548979
>Please explain to me why people flip their shit when an M1 Garand is mentioned.
I wish I could. There's literally nothing that amazing or legendary about it.
It just happened to be a service rifle in ww2. And the m14 mag system, semi auto or not, would have been 1000% better for reasons that should be obvious to everyone.
IDK why they didn't incorporate something other than goofy en bloc clips when magazines were already a thing for many years. That clip feeding should have been phased out from the factories ASAP after the war started.
Still, buy it, it's another neat mid-20th century gun for the collection. Guns designed and/or used from the 40's to the 80's are the coolest ones IMO.
>>
>>31554563
It's just held in place with a bolt.
No damage to the receiver.

The gun is actually in California with my dad.
Untill recently, we didn't know that rail wasn't original.
