What does Russia get out of assisting Syria? I mean, stabilizing the Assad regime is objectively a good thing, but why is Putin committing to this?

Ally on the Med, airbases in the ME. Same reason US backs [insert choice of obvious US puppet regimes here]
>>
You see, back when Russia was the USSR, they could afford to have the Arab world as allies, while the US had the Israelis as allies.

Now Russia is poor as fuck, so all they get is the Shiites, while the US gets both kikes and Sunnis.

All they have in the region is Syria and Iran.

Until they come to terms with the fact that they're an Italy tier power, they will continue to fight quite viciously for the last vestiges of their empire.
>>
They get an ally in the region

It's going to make the war longer and make NATO spend more in the region
>>

Easy.

Step 1: stir shit in Syria. Cause massive waves of western bound refugees ('cause no eastern neighbors will take them).
Step 2: refugees create cultural shock in the whole fucking Europe and destabilize it.
Step 3: Native European population swings right and starts supporting anti-refugee movements...
Step 4: ... which are wholesale pro-Russian.
Step 5: PROFIT!!!

It comes down to oil actually. The west wanted to build a pipeline through syria and have them un-nationalize their oil production. This would have bypassed russian influence of the european market.
>>
>averts Western eyes from Ukrainian quagmire
>displays of Russian power projection boost domestic support for Putin (Russians are basically American rednecks on steroids in terms of patriotism)
>military intervention also averts Russian eyes from a collapsing economy
>get to stick it to the Americans who are literally funding al-Qaeda
>Syria forces Chechen separatists to focus on taking down Assad instead of going back to Russia
>Syria also forces the West to delay any potential military action against Iran

Syria and Iran are crucial to Russia's interests in the Middle East. As long as Syria holds, I think Iran can hold. And as long as Iran holds, then Hezbollah will continue to threaten Israel with a gorillion rockets.

There is no more Russian influence on the European anything market.

Goes like this: imagine a village where a local abusive violent drunk sells cheap moonshine. Neighbors hate him, but tolerate him because his moonshine is cheap.

...but then he gets drunk on his moonshine and rapes the neighbor's wife at gunpoint, and threatens to increase the moonshine price if anyone ever reminds him of it.

At this exact moment the village realizes that there are things more important than money.

Prediction: Russia will be fucked with until there's no more Russia as we used to know it. Then, gradually, they'll be let back in into the civilization - until they inevitably fuck up again, like they did repeatedly during last few hundred years. Rinse and repeat.
>>
>>31547341
Why would Russia give a shit about taking foreign oil when the market is already over saturated?

Except things don't seem to be going that way, I've heard of a few anti-muslim/syrian protests in Germany but nothing that aired for most people to see.

Hillary's currently leading in polls, so 1. America's next up for cultural enrichment and 2. we're going to war with russia or china, or both.

On that, where's everyone heading off to to avoid the draft?
>>
>>31546930
Russia was already allies with Syria, and they had multiple sea bases on the coasts, which are surprisingly important

>I've heard of a few anti-muslim/syrian protests in Germany
Then look closer. Also, look beyond Germany - for example, look at France.

>Hillary's currently leading in polls
Yeah, Putin also has 146% approval rating.

Senpai, UK voted to leave the EU, and the Netherlands may very well vote to leave as well. Thanks in no small part to the immigrants swarming into the EU.

Air base on the med, storage facilities for russian arms being sold or moved into anti-isreali countries, live fire training for russian pilots in air to ground campaigns now that GLOSNAS is largely unusuable, access to secondhand non-russian arms and vehicles for use in infiltrative invasions like in ukraine, weakens Turkey's position as a NATO staging ground into russia in the hopes that they can either scare the US and EU into lifting sanctions or offer up their involvement in syria in exchange for the lifting of sanctions.

By contrast Turkey's government wants ISIS to win as a way of denying both russia and the kurds and iran a safe space to stage from.

Paradoxically, the US wants the civil war to never end - basically the best case scenario for us is that the war continues indefinitely, draining resources from russia, iran and the kurds and ISIS and destabilising anti-israeli governments in neighbouring countries.

A Kurdish/Sunni free state stretching across the bottom of turkey is probably the best result for everyone but the turkish government, as it pisses off turkey enough to mollify russia, denies the area to islamists and creates a buffer zone between the rest of the middle east and turkey that stops stuff from the middle east spilling over into an ally the US needs not to be too pressured right about now.

>Until they come to terms with the fact that they're an Italy tier power

That's unfair, Italy had a half-decent navy until the british launched a pearl habour tier carrier attack on it and sunk most of it - that was always the weird clusterfuck of the axis nations, the germans had a decent army, fighters and submarine force, the japanese a decent carrier force, the italians a decent regular navy.
>>
>>31547272

That makes no fucking sense whatsoever.
>>
>>31547272
>cause no eastern neighbors will take them

Not true, the trouble is there's about 10 million refugees in those countries ALREADY; Europe spazzing out about a million people diluted through a population of 400 million and 20 odd countries is kinda galling to countries like jordan, whose population has effectively tripled since the war started.

It's funny, because prior to the American incited Muslim Brother uprising, there was no Russian presence in Syria except for two Slavs dozing off in a warehouse in Tartus, that people like to call a naval military base.

Now thanks to retarded neo-con and Clintonite chicanery, the Russians have a permanent military presence in Syria, over 5,000 personnel, and state of the art missile systems.

Good fucking job Hillary.

Putin 3, Neo-cons - 0.
