It's going to take a very large number of tanks much longer than 20 min to even have a possibility of sinking the Iowa. Keep in mind that an APFSDS round has a diameter of ~30mm.

Define sink. like the ship is underwater in 20 minutes or if the tanks all stop firing after 20 minutes the Iowa will eventually go under? It'd only take a few firing at different angles to damage it to the point where it'd sink eventually. If the goal is it have it underwater in 20 minutes you'd have to fire many thousands of shells.

Can a MBT even fire at the right angle to cause flooding with a simple penetrator? Punching holes in it above water all day is not going to sink it, and even if you hit it below the water line you need to do so at an angle thats going to do more than simply open a single hole in a single compartment since even if the external compartments are totally flooded you could probably just counterflood the other side and stay afloat.

in this case the tanks really need to hit the magazine. which they can easily, as the m829a3 can carry through more than enough steel to do so. assuming the gunners of 3 m1a1 abrams know where to shoot, as little as 10 minutes; otherwise, a battalion of saudi arabians in those same m1a1s will take like six hours to sink it.

But ok, lets remove as many variables as we can. Lets say an abandoned battleship is in a port somewhere with a hill overlooking it 2 KM away full of tanks.

How many tank 30mm holes distributed as favorably as possible would it take to cause the BB to sink from flooding within 20 minutes

The BB has no crew, no damage control, and no ammunition on board, nobody to click any switches or close anything that isnt automated, and the ship is in the state it would be if it were sitting in reserve waiting to be recommissioned or scrapped.

It should be a problem that can be calculated with a definite answer come to, but fuck if i know enough to do that.
