From my experience, the sweet zone is between 3" - 3.75"
Making it 3" will cut it close with the amount of detailing needed, while 3.75+" makes it a bit too unwieldy

DSA with Izzy handguard, the part where the handguard fits into the rings need to be bent in a little, ground/filed down a bit and the edges evened out. When you bend them it pushes the metal out a bit and the handguards don't sit next to each other right.

I'd imagine it takes hand fitting like AK handguards, but FAL handguards are pretty easy to work with since they're similar to AR handguards. Drop it into the ring near the chamber, screw them together up front
