Explain to me why fixed-wing attack aircraft fell out of favor compared to rotary wing attack aircraft.

They didn't they just upgraded to precision munitions and higher altitude.

Rotary has ability to take off of damn near anywhere while providing good overhead time and vastly better terrain hiding capability.

Trade off is response times, range, speed, overhead time.
>>
>>31512841
Because Key West Agreement. If the army could use planes it would.

>They didn't they just upgraded to precision munitions and higher altitude.

I'm talking more in the realm of cheaper attack aircraft. Why exactly doesn't the Army have any planes like anymore? What makes helicopters so much better?
>>
>>31513066
Because we have an air force now.
>>
>>31513066
>Why exactly doesn't the Army have any planes like anymore?

Because the Army Air Corps became the Air Force.

>What makes helicopters so much better?

Are you really this dense?

Think about the nature of helicopters and the advantages they provide. Now compare that to fixed-wing aircraft.

This is like asking why anyone would ever use an SUV when smart cars exist. They serve two entirely different purposes, and if you can't tell that just by looking at them, it may not be possible for anyone to explain it to you.

Yes.

>Think about the nature of helicopters and the advantages they provide.

The primary advantage that I can think of its that helicopters are inherently VTOL in nature. But does that really make up for the loss in payload and range over a fixed-wing plane? Look at this thing, it can carry all the same weapons as the AH-64, but with greater range.
>>
>>31513229
>But does that really make up for the loss in payload and range over a fixed-wing plane?

Yes. Helicopters can loiter in place, observe and fire much more accurately than a fixed wing. They dont need that much range considering the easyness of refuieling and rearming.

Being organic elements of the army they are closer in doctrine and command to the ground units, they can operate on an entire lower orbit of the airspace to planes'.
>>
>>31513229
However, it is more vulnerable than a helicopter, as a helicopter is more able to make use of terrain masking at all stages- at least when used like Americans like to at the moment.

They also can be rearmed closer to the frontlines from something as simple as a clearing. This means they are based closer and can make more usable sorties.

The military is actually un retiring the OV-10 for cheap CAS in sand land.
>>
>>31513066
fun fact, they've recently upgraded some OV10's and sent them to Iraq.

The capabilities of these things now that they got improved optics/sensors and weapon payloads is outstanding. It's able to spot, designate, track and take out targets all on its own with the exact same weaponry as what other aircraft operating in the region would carry, but at a fraction of the cost.

A helicopter can be a near stationary gun platform in the air. They can pop up from behind terrain, gun down hajjis, and pop back down again.

That's something planes just can't do.

"Everything that flies is mine."

Military branches rivalry and obsession with control of their field. Fixed wing under others control is Nemesis of Air Force and they will not sleep well until its gone.

Rotary wing aircrafts are cheaper to operate and can loiter for longer periods. They're excellent for theatres of operations where the enemy's AAA is nothing more than some old Kord machine gun.

Air Force cannot successfully perform the CAS mission.

The only talent the USAF is holiday parties and fundraising for said holiday parties.

well that's because he needed flying vehicles for when he was chasing the dragon.

USAF here. The holiday parties are shit just like all other forms of mandatory fun.

But the Navy has better air capabilities...

That number was from the V-22 was a prototype. They're pretty cheap to operate now.

The v22 wasn't a prototype when isis became a thing
>>
>>31515604

You're making an assumption that the journalist writing the article would account for that. You would be wrong. The article was written during the rise of ISIS, but the number listed in the article is from when the V-22 was still undergoing testing.
