I'm in the market for a new knife. I lost my Kershaw Blur out in the woods last week and have had no luck finding it at any of my usual stops. Loved the knife, but I'm looking to try out something new. I see a lot of people like Spyderco and Benchmade. Any other suggestions? I generally use it as a box opener at work and an all around field knife out in the woods and when I'm fishing.

Budget?

I'm not too picky, if something is really nice and $30, great, but I'm looking to keep it under $150

Been carrying mine for 5 years or so. I'd buy another if I ever lost it.

I recommend Spyderco but since you're looking for alternatives then I would encourage you to buy a CRKT M16-14SFA or similar.
>>
>>31512493
I'm not specifically looking for alternatives, I know they have a good reputation around here, so I'm just trying to get an idea of what else meets the incredibly high standards of the couch kommandos here
>>
>>31512517
Then the Spyderco Military is the way to go.

But some might flip a coin between it and the CRKT I mentioned. It is a pretty sweet knife. I'm definitely a couch commando now but I sure wish I had one when I was a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne.
>>
>>31512553
I see tons of people with the military. Seems to be a very well Recieved knife.
>>
>>31512575
The Spyderco Military is my EDC. Has been for the past 8 years. I love it.
>>
>>31512424
I'd go with a buck vantage. It's inexpensive, light, thin, and has a nice grip. I'm constantly surprised that they aren't more popular.

Ontario RAT 1. It's about 30$ and operates as smooth or even smoother than my 100$+ knives.

Why not get a Buck 110 and add a thumb stud to it? I think you can get pocket clips to install onto them too so you don't habe to carry it in a pouch.

I carry a Spyderco from time to time, and they're excellent for EDCing. Nice slim profile, solid lockup and the choice of steel and grind types can suit you to the ground. Only thing I'm not fussed on is their customer service, they have a rather shitty attitude when it comes to returns and warranty issues. That could just be me though.

When I'm not carrying a spyderco or any other of my knives though, I tend to carry a custom made friction folder which I'll show you in a sec.

Custom made to order, hand-forged from wrought Iron, Metal cutting bandsaw blades, with a Japanese white paper steel core. Handle is Ramshorn, and the pins and other fittings are brass and nickel silver.

Very, very sharp too. Sharpened it on 4 different grit waterstones (2000, 4000, 8000 and 10,000), then stropped it with razor stropping soap on a Water Buffalo hide strop. It can literally cut a dangling hair with hardly any effort needed.

Only shit thing about it is it doesn't have a pocket clip.

I'll also second this, excellent budget knife, some others would be the Kabar dozier or the Spyderco tenacious.

Spyderco Endura Wave

I have some more expensive spyderco's like the pm2 and manix 2 As well as some other knives in the same/similar price range

This one by far gets the most pocket time.

$180 new, $150 used. Perfect knife for any condition, especially if you want a knife for both outdoors/edc tasks.

Perhaps you should identify it.
>>
>>31514144
My bad, Benchmade Contego 810; you can batton with it and still shave hair off your arm thanks to the CPM-M4 super steel
>>
>>31514010

How do you mean? It does what it's intended use is. I don't really care if my knife needs to be opened with one or two hands when I'm carrying it in the city. I tend to carry a one handed opening folder in the woods, along with two larger blades.
>>
>>31514189

How does CPM sharpen? I've heard it's a pain in the ass.

I have a few D2 blades that can't be sharpened with certain stones, I have to exclusively use a DMT stone to properly sharpen them. They do keep an edge for what seems like forever though.
>>
>>31514342
The good thing about the thumb nick is that you can use the entire blade for cutting, if you slice something up with that mod you will just run into it.
>>
check out rat-3.
>>
>>31514393

Hah. Never thought of it like that.

You can open Bucks one handed by doing the spyder drop, but you risk throwing your knife into a ravine doing that innawoods.
>>
>>31514376
I use a cheap 1/2 ceramic 1/2 carbide steel pull through sharpener for sharpening all of my knives and I've had no problems getting a shaving sharp edge on CPM or D2. I can't get AUS 8 or 8cr13mov that sharp though.

For $30-$40 it's hard to beat this
>>
>>31514517

Softer steels can be a pain in the ass. I find that using a Diamond stone with a medium grit, then not stropping them helps. Instead of a nice, polished edge, you get an edge full of microserrations which helps cut heavy fabrics, cardboard, etc. better, but won't have a razor sharp edge.

Im serious 40 bucks takes it
What more do you want from me
