Reloading thread?! Currently set up for .308 only. Looking to expand to 5.56 for blasting ammo. I can get 55gr bulk bullets and have brass. Any reccomendations on an easy metering powder?

Current .308 load:
168gr SMK
39.9gr H4895
MKE stamped brass (ZQ1)
CCI #200
COAL 2.790"

Bench looks good thumbsup.jpg

I just have a pretty basic Lee setup. I use Varget powder for pic related and a SCAR 17S

Hornady 168gr BTHP
44.0gr Varget
Hornady brass
CCI Large Rifle Primers
COAL 2.795

Last trip out I got .58" group at 100y which was the best in that load range (42 up to 44 grains in small increments)

Just don't get the regular Lee 4 hole turret press, I had one for years and it was shit. I didn't lose anything from switching to a basic single stage either, but apparently the Classic Turret is pretty good. If it's anything like their Classic Cast I'm sure it will be fine.

I don't really know about the Cam Lock trimmer; I've had really bad results with a Forster so I gave up on trimmers that hold the case at the head. I have a hardon for the Wilson though, if you can find one for a price you'd like to pay I'd say give it consideration. It's such a nice operation and the results are about as good as you can.

It's a good idea to get some check weights for your scales.

Noted. Thanks my dude
>>
I don't have a picture of my setup because I'm at work but I just use two Lee breech lock challenger presses and I'm going to put a third on there at some point and three Lee powder throwers.
The presses are nice but the powder throwers needed a little work, they leaked a lot of powder out of the box. I'm set up for reloading 9mm, 45acp, 38 super, and 308 at the moment.

I'd like to get into reloading, esp now that gunmageddon and background checks for ammo are a sure thing in Cali.

Where do i start? What's the average cost of a simple bench? I'm looking to reload 5.56/.223 and 300 blk.

You can buy a kit that has everything you need for around 250-300. I peiced it all together as I needed stuff or wanted to upgrade. I built my bench for about 30$.

25.0 gr H335 is my usual go to for 55gr 223... Pretty fine ball powder that meters usually dead on to a tenth in my cheap ass Lee perfect powder measure and doesn't leak out like the super fine powders...
H322, Ramshot TAC, CFE 223, and varget are ok too.
>>
>>31489101
no; single stage presses are the most stable and precise, in general. They just don't allow you to crank out 10,000 rounds of ammo a day.

I use multiple single stage presses and swap dies out as needed, up to and including 50bmg. I know they will be accurate.

When you get going the turret presses and multi stage presses are nifty for higher volumes. But try before you buy so you know what you are in for. The stability of these presses is not the same as single stage unless you have some very high dollar turret.

Start with a single stage and one or two die sets, and low cost primer pocket cleaner. case reamer etc. If you buy all Lee stuff it is cheap and it works. The lee case holder/trimmers are cheap and always cut to a precise length. You can do everything with a hand drill and a single stage press.
>>
>>31489101
They are ok, the breech lock kit has a little better priming system. Lee case prep tools kind of suck and will be replaced before long. You need something to trim brass too.
>>
>>31487888
I've found a good recipe if you're getting into the heavier bullets (69gr/77gr)

24.5gr Ramshot Tac
Lake City Brass (but other brass should work fine)
COAL 2.280 Should fit in a mag just fine. Absolutely great powder, easy peasy metering and dead accurate with no pressure issues.
>>
>>31487888
H335 is good. Meters well and can be used with .308.
I like Varget and use it a lot but it is a stick powder and as such a bit of a pain to meter.
>>
>>31489181
what's wrong with lee case prep tools? I find them to be useful and long lasting.
>>
>>31489191
I have no problems metering Varget with a basic Lee powder throw. Maybe every 20 throws I will hear it bite a stick in half, and measuring for QC shows me the throw is always the same weight down to the 1/2 grain.
>>
>>31489194
They hurt my hands after a while... There is nothing "wrong" with them, I just found I like the lyman tool with the big handle and the bits I can chuck in my drill to speed stuff up.

You can find bench plans everywhere. I was redoing my kitchen at the time and just grabbed an old bunch of drawers with countertop on them and screwed everything onto it and use the drawers to hold supplies. It doesn't take a ton of space to reload.

The Lee kit is a really good value. It's done everything I've asked of it, but I would recommend upgrading the scale. I got a digital Frankford Arsenal one from Amazon, everything else is just stuff from the Lee kit.

It's a seemingly large up-front investment, and I all but gave up shooting reloads in my SCAR, I just buy factory stuff for that. But if you're going to shoot precision rifle, you're going to have to be able to tailor loads to your rifle, plus it's cheaper than buying gold medal match every range trip.

Youtube has 100 series on starting reloading, that's where I learned everything.

can confirm. i loaded up a bunch last summer very close to these numbers

>>31489338
Since I went ahead and did ladder test for my blasting ammo, they still end up about 1moa capable with hornady soft points... They just won't do as well out at 600+ like the 75gr stuff will. And for bulk I use the cheap FC 223 brass that I don't have to trim which speeds things up a lot...
I want to say I load 24.1gr TAC and a hornady 75gr bthp for the good stuff past 300, 22.1 H322 with the same bullet for 100-400 yards is super accurate in my gun but velocity isn't great.

Ive pretty much decided on a reddig t7 for my first press. Plan on doing .308 and .357 right now, might do more once i get some more guns.

Ive reloaded with my old man before so ive got the gist of it but i dont understand how to develope rounds. Like what is the process to find what works best in your rifle, how do i know which variables effect what ect? I know it sounds like a strange question but theres a lot of variables to account for and messing with them at random doesnt sound very economic precise or scientific.

Also who makes the most precise dies.

You use your load book as a starting point and go from there. The name of the game is consistency. When your rounds are consistent you can identify exactly what the problem might be.
It's really educated trial and error when it comes to powder weight, and seating depth to a point. Every rifle is different and will shoot a minutely different load.

It's ok, the safety prime system is slower than the hand primer. The challenger kit comes with a quick trim head too.

Sub-1moa out to 200 yards and I can easily push it to 400+ with very little drop off or pressure signs. Ramshot makes some damn awesome powders. I'm probably going to pick up another 8lber just to have on hand.

And this almost comically overbuilt trimmer. I like to keep it on my desk because it's just so pretty to look at. If you want accuracy to the thou every case and a perfectly square trim then this is the best way to spend a lot of money doing it.
>>
>>31490623
Whats the name of the trimmer, looks dope as fuck.

Are all dies more or less the same or is it worth dropping extra cash on them. Who makes "the best", are there any to avoid?
>>
>>31490678
It's L.E. Wilson.

I don't actually know too much about dies, at least not about the top end of the scale. I have a mix of Lee and RCBS but I think I would go for Redding if I could do it again. I think most companies have basic dies and then stuff with micrometeres on them which cost more, then there's stuff like expensive collet dies so you can adjust neck tension and stuff. I just reload for milsurp and general target shooting so none of that would make much of a difference for me.

People speak highly the strength of Lee collet sizing dies, and I think there may be credence to it because I have had to replace broken pins in both my .303 and 6.5x55 neck sizers, and the whole shaft after the threads stripped.

I would read up about the various brands and models, then select the best of the bunch. If that means Lee sizers and Redding seaters then that's fine, they don't have to be the same brand or model. Some other /k/omrade can probably tell you more.
>>
>>31490678
For most reloading needs a standard 2 or 3 die set is all you need. But if you want match loads a micrometer seating die is almost a must. Same goes for a neck bushing die for custom chambers or desired neck tension.

Among the big die makers it's almost universal high quality, RCBS,Redding, Forrester, and Hornady all make great dies. I use dies from all 4.

If I'm shopping for cheap dies I usually stick with Hornady, for match dies I go Forrester. I feel each offers the best value of quality and performance for the category.
>>
>>31490678
You'll find that guys that have big 1050s use all kinds of dies around the press. You will see stuff like Lee decapper followed by Redding sizer then RCBS powder through with a Hornady powder cop instead of the Dillion one then a Hornady seater and ending with a Lee FCD for crimp. I just made that up but basically there is no BEST brand. Some are better at different things than others. I use mostly Hornady and Lee dies. Forster makes a great 300 blackout set but the Lee is just fine and is 1/3rd the cost.
A couple of my favorites that you might not think of when shopping for dies based only on caliber:
Lee universal decapper and universal expander - great dies to have around. Decapping before tumbling is much nicer than decapping while sizing. I wet tumble and the primer pockets and flash holes come out great every time.
RBCS swagger - $30 vs Dillion's swagger at $100 and really just as good IMO
>>
>>31490790
It's really not worth the extra money for micrometer and collet/bushing dies if you're doing regular reloading. Even if you are doing match reloading you won't need a collet die unless youve got a custom throat or an ungodly picky rifle. A single micrometer seating die is really all you need, and that's just to insure reliable seating depth without having to seat 3 rounds and adjust.

Really you can't go wrong with dies for normal reloading. Don't worry about the special features and shit for now, just learn first. Id recommend starting with a basic RCBS or Hornady die set. Hornady has a new line of discount dies that is perfect for a beginner.
>>
>>31490844
I like to size and decap after tumbling because I hate case lube and clean brass runs fine though my necksizers even without it.
>>
>>31490880
Sorry, I meant just the regular plain old Lee sizing dies with the huge, solid shaft and pin.

Quite right that you don't need neck collets and micometers for normal reloading, though a micrometer cuts out a little work.
>>
>>31490890
B..but the lube is what makes it romantic.

I decap, wet tumble, lube (15:1 iso/lanolin), size/swage/trim, dry tumble with a cap full of Nu Finish.
I can turn nigger-grade trash to sexy time brass with this. Doing it this way makes the lubing way easier, too. Dump brass in a bucket, spray some lube in, shake it up, do my press work, drop in dry tumbler to finish clean and remove lube in one shot. Lubing 100 cases takes like 1-2 minutes.
>>
>>31490623
Lee goes on and on in his books about reloading companies that make/made excellent quality equipment, but did not succeed all that well as a business because the equipment was *too* good for the market.

There is a lot to be said for a super-well built piece of equipment, though.. I'm going to go look for that trimmer because it is so nice to look at & would be fun to adapt to a motor.

Anyone reloading 9x19 for a G19 here using a 124gr FMJ bullet?
I need to know what's a good ballpark of velocities to aim for with general use ammo (i.e. something that will also reliably cycle through an MP5).

The load most people around here recommended (4.0 grs of D032) gave me barely 300 m/s with a noticeably weak recoil and lots of unburnt powder. QL thinks otherwise, so it looks like a weaker batch (fairly common for shit ass Explosia powders). That means I'll have to develop the load using velocities alone while checking for overpressure, so, what velocities do you usually end up with?
>>
>>31491939
recommended velocities in my book are from 300 m/s to 349 m/s for 124 grains FMJ, maybe the powder is too slow ? Do you crimp your ammo ?
>>
I just bought new brass; do I need to do a size on it? It's a bottle necked cartridge. I've only loaded once fired brass before.
>>
>>31492002

I'm interested in G19 specific velocities (~10cm barrel), most load data in manuals is calculated for a much higher barrel length.
Case in point is your book, no chance in hell of getting ~350 m/s out of it while staying anywhere near CIP pressures.

>maybe the powder is too slow
Nah. It's +- equivalent to AA No. 2, so it's pretty fucking snappy.

>Do you crimp your ammo ?
I put a Lee FCD at the last stage.

>>
>>31491288
thats not bad at all. ive been using once fired 223 brass and for the most part, the brass length has all been well under 1.760" but ill need a trimmer soon.
>>
>>31492081
No. You only resize and trim your brass when it needs to. It'll last a helluva lot longer that way.
>>
Does anyone know where or when pull down powder is ever for sale? I'm looking up military liquidation but so far nothing but really cheap ammocans.
>>
>>31490918
The Lee basic dies are over built as hell, one complaint I have about RCBS and Forrester especially are weak decaping pins. The stem itself is mint I havent broken one yet across 5 calibers but the actually pins are stupid easy to break on a progressive press. Its a good thing if you're using brass with a tight flash hole but it's a pain when they break.

I use a Lee die set for my .44mag and I've bent but not broken the pin. Had it set to deep.

Micrometers are great but not worth the extra $$ if youre not shooting more than one Match load per caliber. Think about it, with a normal seating die it's largely set and forget once you have a good load worked up. In my case I shoot 3 different .223 loads out of 3 different rifles and 2 different .308 loads out of two more rifles. Needless to say the extra $100 for the 1 die that allows me to switch loads near instantly is well worth it. Now the only time I've ever known anyone that uses a collet sizing die uses it for a custom 6ppc bench gun. Whenever I'm having problems with neck tension I just set the decap down until it's working right. It'll be as uniform either way, one way is $120 more lol.
>>
>>31492934
Not since like mid 2000s, I'm not even sure anyone will be selling pull downs after the stock is rotated because of all the hazmat fees.
>>
>>31492899
Ur dumb

Unless you bought pristine brass in a nice little rack, the necks have probably all been beat together and are out of round. Full length size every new piece of brass that hasn't been fired out of your rifle...

Ramshot TAC meters extremely well. It has given me great accuracy results out of my savage 12 with both light and heavy bullets.
RCBS and Hornady dies are my favorite in the lower price range. Don't get a micrometer seating die unless you shoot benchrest of F-class.
>>
>>31491288
>sooo.. how do you like it?
Love it. Saw it an the Forster in the shop I got it from, but had already ordered the Forster. As soon as I saw the two in person I knew I made a mistake, I immediately wanted the other. Turns out I had a great excuse, the Forster didn't want to hold the case square to the cutter and wouldn't accept some of my brass. End result was a slightly uneven cut. Anyway I thought that was bullshit for what should essentially be a lather and ordered the Wilson the same day, sold the Forster.

The thing itself is like a piece of industrial equipment shrunk down to workbench size, it's all milled steel and really thicker and heavier than necessary. I love the shell holder system too, it's really fast to use and very accurate. And the holders themselves are nice since they're of the same build. Trims really well and would last a lifetime and them some more lifetimes unless you purposefully break it. Honestly it's not the sort of thing you still expect to find being made in the modern age of cost reduction, at least not when it's being sold for the price it is.

The Lee priming tool is redundant. I use my classic turret press for priming often.

You don't have a media separator on that list.

Quick-n-EZ Case Tumbler Kit https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000TTILBC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_OUk7xb40J0MVR

A go/no-go case length gauge is convenient.

You will want a double disk kit and a powder drop spacer. Double disk is a must. The adjustable disk is sorta ok but I wouldn't trust it.

Get a bench mount powder drop with the old fashioned screw in/out gauge. Super easy and super reliable.

A Lyman case trimmer with drill attachment is a fairly painless solution to processing a lot of brass. Check with the pass through gauge and trim the long ones. Clean up the case mouth with the Lyman case prep tool and check for military primer crimp.
>>
>>31497226
I prime on my press but I only do very small volumes, 50 cases or often less at a time, so it's not a problem. For higher volumes I would go for something like a bench primer, I have had a Lee Auto Prime snap in my hands and never found it to seat primers consistently anyway.

BLC-2 is super easy to meter because it's a small-grain ball powder.

Performs decently but is a little more temp-sensitive than other options.
>reloading 55gr ball blasting ammo
Eugh. I do this too, still not sure if worth it. Brass prep is a goddamn nightmare.

I need to buy a replacement decapping rod assembly for my .300wm dies, got a case ultra-stuck yesterday and mangled it trying to get the brass out.
>>
>>31489216
>down to the half grain
There's no way your loads are accurate. And possibly not even safe.

You need to be measuring to a tenth of a grain. Stop using a $10 weed scale.
>>
>>31489773
Yes?
>buy .25-20 and .32-20 dies
>reload like any other caliber
There's notthing special or unique about those calibers, and most companies make appropriate bullets for them.

>>31491939
I aim for 1050 fps with 4.3 gr of n320

Anyone here discover loadings for BE-86? It's new enough that basically no one has anything for it.

It cycled my M9A3 at 5.0 grains driving a Hornady 115gr XTP bullet, and not before.

My M&P shield started cycling it earlier, at around 4.2 or 4.4gr.

Now I'm going to use it to drive a 124gr X-Treme plated RN.

Also, what's the best digital scales you guys use? I've got a frankford arsenal one.
>>
>>31499712

Yea man, I know. I want a dillon progressive. Right now I have other financial things to take care of. It is on my list however.
>>
>>31499712
how accurate does it get your powder?
>>
>>31499793
not him but I use this, super cheap mg scale.
https://www.amazon.com/American-Weigh-GEMINI-20-Portable-MilliGram/dp/B0012TDNAM

compared to 15k lab scales at school and it's accurate. I have had 4, all accurate. sold 2 to friends for reloading.

dont need tospend a lot

I need to check that out...

Sorry, the TAC was on clearance at a local gunstore. They have 6lbs left at 20$/pound. Nobody buys it apparently. Should I go and scoop it all up?
>>
>>31500867

Tenth of a grain with D073.4 (equivalent to AA 2230), D073-03 (WC 844) and D032 (AA No. 2), i.e. fine ball powders. Maybe better but that's the limit of my scales anyway.
Never tried it with extruded or flake powders, but these tend to suck ass in pretty much all machines.
>>
Stuff ive found that meters well, works for most 223's and burns clean is Hodgdons cfe223. Varget works well too, but here in ca i never see any.

So for scales what to get?

So what exactly is a collet die? I see lee makes some with "smallest grouping ever" claim and theyre expensive, but how do they differ from a normal set of dies?
>>
>>31504274
They squeeze the brass rather than smash it which gardens it less and is more uniform... Lee neck sizing dies aren't all that expensive...

God yes buy as much of it as you can. I've seen it go as high as 36/pound during the panic last couple of years. It's becoming a more and more popular powder, especially with heavy bullets.

It's very nice to have. Bought this place a few months back. Tools and presses shared a 4 foot work area.

I could use some tips on hornady progressive presses. The Lee took some time to get to know all of the kinks. I'm finding myself unsure if the hornady is correctly priming cases. I get primer misfeeds occasionally and end up fouling the plate with powder.

Well fuck me right. Yes it was lubed enough. It came out easiliy enough.
>>
>>31510373
Some might say it is taboo but for particularly difficult cases I use motor oil. I tumble the cases after resizing/depriming in media that I have specifically set aside for that purpose. I've gotten to the point where I do all of my 308 this way.
>>
Anyone here have a RCBS Chargemaster?

I'm getting tired of manually measurING out all of my loads and wanted something faster. I have a Lee Perfect Powder Dispenser but it fucking leaks everywhere.
>>
>>31512023
Get a Prometheus gen 2. Measures down to a single pellet of powder. Only $3200 for a 25 year lease.
>>
What powders do you personally own for reloading rifles and pistols?

Right now I only have Hodgdon h414 for rifle and Accur #7 for pistol.

I'm into reloading lighter bullets for higher velocities right now.
>>
>>31512265
I've got BE-86. Seems nice, only problem is no one has loadings for it.
>>
>>31512023

Take the PMM apart and lube it with powdered graphite. Fixed the leaking issue with mine.
>>
>>31512023
I have a chargemaster. so far it's been pretty good but at times it will overthrow charges if it slows down too far from the target weight so the trickle will end up overweight. only happens every so often, the most egregious overthrows are by 0.3 grains most of the time it's dead on and occasionally throws 0.1 grains over.

>>
>>31512546
That notation implies it is a 6.5mm projectile in a 284mm case. 6.5-284 is not.
>>
>>31492899
This is false. I resize my brass when it needs it, but full length sizing is critical, especially in semi autos. Bolt guns should be sized minimally so the case contacts the chamber walls a few thousandths before the bolt closing.
>>
>>31512645
It was based on a necked down.284 Winchester case... the design was purchased and standardized by Norma. I'm not sure what your point is here... it's a pretty common notation

would you be happier if everyone wrote 6.5-284 to appease your autism?

I'm dissapointed /k/
>>
>>31512683
No problems yet. I usually tumble them clean then deprimed, size, clean the primer pocket, size the case length and cleanup the mouth before tumbling again to get the oil off. That way I have nearly perfect brass to work on. Just primer, bullet and powder.

I decap and wet tumble all my brass now... Makes it super clean and using a little car wash soap makes them size easier without much lube. I use a harbor freight double rock tumbler with a drum I made from a big chunk of pipe and a test plug for a lid. Glued in little strips of rubber to act as agitators... I guess I never took photos on my phone though...

Some guys use food dehydraters, too.

I've just been laying them out on a towel in the sun, and they tend to get spots. Oddly enough, the first time I just laid them out inside and used a fan, there were no spots.

The spots shouldn't hurt anything though, right? They're just cosmetic.
>>
>>31514471
Using Lemishine, broham? Keeps the spotting down, helps clean, and actually strengthens the brass too (it is citric acid).
The spots don't hurt anything and it doesn't matter anyways since after you lube and size you should dry tumble to finish polish/remove case lube before loading.

It's just a little calcium deposit, won't hurt much. I just dump the brass in the middle of the towel and fold it in thirds hot dog style then grab the ends and roll them back and forth until most of the outside is dry. Then I just set it out in my garage to let the inside and primer pockets dry.

I just got one of the lyman gen6 powder dispensers from Cabelas for like $150... It's pretty sweet so far. I tried to build a little weighing table for it so I could have it do its thing while I seated bullets, but my legs suck and it's a little wobbly...I should have drilled pilot holes for the screws but I was in a hurry...
