I miss training in different countries and meeting different armies. I don't miss training state side in the "field" freezing or burning up and eating mres for weeks on end and not showering for an equal amount of time, don't miss sleeping in a fox hole either.

I've got six months left until I EAS. Which is awesome, but I've got mixed feelings on it at the same time.

I'm obviously not going to stay in. I don't want to deal with political lifers fucking us over to stack up their SRBs anymore, I don't want to have people inspect my room for cleanliness as an adult, wait around for four hours to receive two minutes of word, etc.

But I feel like as soon as I get out, some other big conflict is going to pop off. I already missed my chance by hitting the fleet right after our unit had sent their last OEF pump. Also, we'd once had a warning order for Iraq only to have it drawn out and then the mission go to another unit. I don't know what you guys have to say about this one, because it's one of those "it is what it is" situations if that's how it goes down. Staying in the military on the gamble that a conflict or "war" may happen, and that I may be in a position to participate is just asinine, so that's not an option. It just kind of sucks, spending all of the time that we did training for combat and then never actually going. I'm rambling here.

The main thing I'm worried about is how much I'm going to miss the guys in my platoon. I've gotten close as hell with them since I've been in. Shitty field ops, shitty duties, on and off ships, partying in different ports, training in miserable countries, stupid shit at the barracks, general shenanigans, just a really tight bond and chances are I probably won't ever be that close of friends with anybody else. They're what I'm going to miss about the military. Not the "esprit de corps", shooting neato weapons, 96s, or anything like that.

Anybody have experience with anything like this? Also just the transition, checking out, getting used to civilian life again, anything would be helpful to hear from vets ITT.

Here's a picture of baby bulldogs being cute.

Have you ever thought about killing a desert tortoise? Like getting away with it, but then telling someone in your chain of command that somebody had killed a desert tortoise? Or telling range control? But ensuring that you got away with it?

I've thought about doing this so many times, just because I feel like it would cause a huge shitshow. But I only run into scorpions and don't tread on me serpents out there.

Sorry you're in the stumps, brah. Pendleton is probably one of the best duty stations in the military.
>>
>>31483038
The Marines at least still teach it in boot camp and their follow on combat training, but it's not really something focussed on or used much due to how the US has been doing mainly COIN for the past decade and a half. COIN doesn't really require soldiers or marines to be concealed and tactical to the extent of needing camo paint on their face, and when patrolling in a city having camo paint can actually go against the mission by looking alien and weird to the natives.
>>

Can I ask a serious question? And I swear I mean no disrespect to any active or former members of the military.

Why are there so many...how should I put this...total fuck ups in the military? Of all the people I know who enlisted I'd say half are pretty regular people and the other half might be legally retarded. Why is this? Why do these gravitate to the armed forces? Is because they know they'll take anyone?

>>
>>31483642

None taken, dude. The amount of window lickers I've met since I've been in is insane. I think it's a mix of:

>you don't necessarily have to be smart to get in

The requirements for a lot of jobs are a complete joke.

>the military doesn't require you to think for yourself as much

Which, some people love and others (like myself) absolutely cannot stand.

My final theory, and the one I believe the most:

>it's harder to get rid of you

Your staff and officers would have to go through a long, tedious process of paperwork being documented/routed up higher through the command until a decision is made. Usually you've got to do something pretty major, drugs, or get in trouble a lot for them to kick you out.

As a civilian, they just fire you.

That's about all I can come up with for an answer for you.
>>
>>31483692

>>
>>31483724

There's plenty of dumb people in the military who make life a lot more difficult for those around them. Whether they're peers, somebody's junior, or in charge of somebody else.

I get the feeling that you understand that not all service members are like this. Just in case, there's what I hope is a silent majority and if not that, a large portion of the US military who are anywhere from competent to brilliant that can't stand how a lot of people in the military act, think, speak, etc. Some people automatically assume that's everyone, especially residents of communities near bases.

>>
>>31483950
A lot of the VW's that get to pre-RASP are the guys that were never 100% convinced that being a ranger was what they wanted to be. They see how the RASP class across the courtyard is suckin' and some just jump ship there. Others hear that there's a bunch of slots open for X Airborne unit, and take the easy way out.

I got accepted into some decent schools as a senior in high school. I did that to basically appease my folks, though. I'm dropping my airborne packet next week but I'm still shit at running. what's the longest and fastest you had to run at airborne school?

Do you get to keep you assault rifle at home once your done? What do they issue you bro? God I miss Switzerland, most beautiful place ever

Because they need a lot of retarded meatbags to do retarded meatbag jobs but because of the educational requirements of officers the average level of education of military personnel is higher than the average citizen.

>As in a guy told me he buried cats in the mud with their heads sticking out, and ran their heads over with a lawn mower.

Sounds like my best friend of 20 years

>Get off work, drive over to house of parents in law
>They have like 50 stray cats they feed all the time in their front yard
>Shit all over the place etc.
>Go home, soak whole chicken in a bucket of anti freeze
>Drive by next morning around 4am to go to work
>Throw it in the parents in law yard
>Get phone call around noon ex wife (current at the time) "OH MY GAWD THERE'S SO MANY DEAD CATS IN THE YARD OH MY GAWD THERE'S LIKE THIRTY DEAD CATS"
>Barely keeps composure

We had a hearty giggle when he told me about it the next afternoon.

That's at the Schofield Barracks, right?

I saw it from a distance a couple of times when we ported in Hawaii.

I'm still in, just on post-float leave. But, Pendleton. It's really a nice spot to be stationed. Tons of things to do within short/relatively short drives away from the base. Our op tempo is unforgiving, though.

The transition classes really did help. They sent me in a time-frame where I couldn't go to any of the education/employment workshops, which is what I wanted to utilize the most from them. But, still, a lot of good information.

Best of luck when it comes to interviews on those applications.
>>
>>31484551
Yeah, Schofield Barracks.

Best of luck to you in your endeavors as well.

Va screwed me and i owe them 16k. Been living off 1100 a month disability past 2 years hitch hiking the US and using gi bill for online school. I dont have a legit address so i never got the letter saying i owe money and they have deducted my 1100 to 800. I need to find a job now

Early is late considering the alternative is never.

>yet officer common sense is at an all time low in my unit

So I got a specialty platoon in another company after my first pl time. Holy fuck is this new company stupid as fuck. It's all about the Micky mouse trash and not about accomplishing the mission or tasks to standard, but by God we'll write a four page aar to upload into dtms to never look at again about how we can train better next time, instead of focusing on the next actual training event.

>I know, let's have closeout formation at 1900, even though everyone was done at 1600.

I swear,I'm going to change this company into something great, even if it means butting heads with my rater, 1sg, and peers. A new psg showed up before me and is totally on board to just start doing our own thing and just being not pants on head retarded.

>what do you mean you didn't write a 5 paragraph opord and present it to the platoon for pt? We have to do that every day.

The shit they come up with.

I don't want to Army any more. I'm tired of my CO being a fucking retard, I'm tired of civilian SJWs mandating how the Army is run, I'm tired of being expected to be some politically-minded brown-nosing cocksucker so I can get the E6 I don't even want. I want to be left the fuck alone on my goddamned Stryker and allowed to do my job with an actual vehicle crew that's competent, rather than getting the misfits and fuckups cycled through every other fucking month. Then when we have no qualified fucking Stryker drivers and they look at me like its my fault they stuck me with non-driving mouth-breathers, I'm stuck holding the goddamn bag. I'm tired of this shit.
>>
>>31484859
MOS? I work with maintenance in an infantry battalion and I fucking hate clb for all their bullshit. They singlehandedly have fucked my units readiness so hard. Their CO even got relieved recently due to their bullshit.
>>
>>31484952

It's pretty atrocious. Especially when you've got a BLT, CE, and a CLB on a ship together.

As I'm sure you'd assumed, the BLT is a sausage-fest, CE has onesies and twosies at most, but they're so small and obscure that it's hardly noticable. But, CLB, given the MOSes within the unit, is full of wooks.

Needless to say, this is NOT a good formula for a group of Marines underway on a ship for months at a time between ports.

Our ship had wooks getting into orgies with Recon, Weapons Company, all sorts of horror stories.

Not trying to bring you down, but this may in fact be the type of shit you have to deal with. No matter if they're your boots, or if they're in charge of you (I've got no clue where you fall on the rank structure).

Speaking of which, don't get me wrong, I'm just a MEU-baby Corporal, but a lot of the NCOs within our CLB were nothing but glorified boots.

If you don't mind me asking...
How tall are you?

I only ask because I'm in Marine Corps DEP waiting to request an MOS and I was hoping for aircrew.
When I enlisted in the Navy (discharged because I dropped out of high school) I got aircrew no problem. I'm 6'1" so I don't think it should be a problem but it would be nice to have some input.

That's because when the shooting starts, you'll know exactly where US troops are whether they have camo or not.

M4's are loud as hell. 240b's are even louder.

More often than not infantry are on the move and not waiting with dense camo for the enemy. Less shit they have to fuck with the better.

That part of growning up though, the loosing super tight friendships, Wasnt in the military but used to have a group of friends that jumped trains, lived rough and basicly fucked up all over the lower 48. "It was the best of times it was the worst of times" makes the best friends. Were fucking old now , i cant live for another dude over my wife and kid, you get new things you care about. They are better, but youll miss tge friendships and comradery . But you wont be pulling dave out of a ditch every drunken night, you wont be in legal issuses (or fuck by your co in your case) becuase you have to shit up and not point out ted for being a fucktard.
Its diffrent, youll miss it. Grow the fuck up and move on.
