Its a weight and efficiency thing. Most people done need miles of rail space, and you can maintain rigidity without the rails there so why not make them user adaptable?

I could also see this being beneficial from a parts wear standpoint. Rails break and wear, but slots like MLOK will probably not wear as badly.

MLOK and keymod exist for the sole reason of cutting production cost. the weight saving is minimal

More and more companies are switching to M-Lok only (Colt Canada, Geissele, etc.) and companies that make both Keymod and M-Lok rails say that they sell 3 times more of the M-Lok versions than the Keymod.

Weight savings. The gun already weighs a lot. A full length rail will add even more on. I wouldn't be surprised if the military is testing out how well m-lok holds up over time.
Besides, all that rail space is overkill. Most people only put a light and laser on their rifles. Small sections for forgrips and bipods.

They built rails for the HK416s using the factory H&K barrel nuts, I guess they then started selling all their rails with similar nuts.
