What is the export potential of the J-20?

It's out of prototype and into LRIP, will China look for a buyer?
>>
>>31477133
It'd have to be pretty cheap.

Russia and India are on the PAK FA train, most other major nations are US-aligned (or at least relatively so) and going for the F-35. I can't think of any other nation in the market for a fifth gen fighter that can afford it.
>>
>>31477160
Maybe Pakistan?
>>
>>31477250
Pakistan definitely, North Korea depending on if they want to have a 10 year famine, if it's cheap enough maybe some one in South America like Venezuela.
>>
As has already been pointed out, most of the countries with tbig enough military budgets to buy the J-20 are either already commited to a 5th gen program, or are not friendly to China.

Maybe in a decade or two once; the J-20 is a proven aircraft, the gen 4.5+ aircraft for sale are seen as categorically inferior to 5th gen, and maybe some of the current proposed 5th gen aircraft programs fail to perform to specification.

In future there might be some sales to be had in SEA and the ME. Africa and South America won't be interested in a 5th gen fighter any time soon.
>>
>>31477386
If they wanted to sell to those nations they'd probably have to do so at a loss.

I can't see China willing to sell this thing. Isn't that what the J-31 is for?

I am surprised the cannards arent made out of non-metalic composite materials. The edges are but the main bulk of the cannard is definitely made from a metalic material.

I'm sure the J-20 has more composites than one can see.

Some Chinese birds have the zinc-chromate primer being painted over the whole plane, while some leave the composite parts green.

India dropped and bough rafaels
>>
>>31479513
India did not drop the PAKFA / FGFA development, they just "renegotiated" the contract.

Just like they tried to do with France for the Rafale, but France told them to go suck a cock.. which they did.
>>
>>31477547
Yeah.

If China was willing to sell J-20's, there would have been more news about that already.

Instead we have them selling upgraded soviet stuff and a few home brews that they copied the recipe from elsewhere but added some Chinese stuff too.

The J-31 is their export stealthyish aircraft, just like they have ZTZ99's, but only the MBT-3000 is for export.

There seems to be a significant gap between the canards and the body of the air frame, unlike the prototypes which were more blended.

Maybe they are putting less of an effort into stealth for ease of manufacture?
>>
>>31477133
J-20 is not for export.

If it was though, here are the issues: India and Russia wont buy it due to politics. Russia wont abandon the Pak-FA due to it being their only chance at retaining a fighter industry in the near future. India wont due to being nearly at war with China in a repeated fashion.

Packistan cant ever afford that, and no other country would buy it. Any southeastern Asian countries are now at odds with china, so there goes Malaysia or any other non western aligned buyers.

The US is getting ready to flood the market with cheap F-16s which is part of a greater strategy of aviation hegemony. It will probably royally fuck the Eurofighter and Rafel's future prospects, as well as hamper other exports.

So they dropped the helmet display?

It seems they have dropped the HMD, at least for now.

This points to the J-20 IR system not being a true DAS replication (the HMD is intregral to this), being more like the F-22's IR MAW's system, which can also do threat detection.

Maybe the frontal EO, and the EODAS system being on a display like a traditional fighter looking though a pod.

There is too little information to discern that.

The HUD does not preclude a lack of HMD, as every Chinese fighter has those same wide angle holographic HUDs as the J-20.
>>
>>31480172
>There is too little information to discern that.

The pilot is not wearing an HMD in that pic.

>The HUD does not preclude a lack of HMD

There is zero reason to have a HUD if you have an HMD, all it will do is obstruct your vision at best, at worse clutter your HMD view with the same information that its already providing, just off center due to POV differences.
>>
>>31477547
Pakistan was looking to "buy" those. Catch up with India and the Pakfa

No, and no Chinese operational pilot ever flown with a HMD.

In fact, their helmets were standard Chinese pilot helmets.

But this doesnt mean that the J-20 might not be designed with HMDs in mind. The existence of a HUD is also no reason, because Chinese design philosophy stresses redundancy.
>>
>>31480244
>No, and no Chinese operational pilot ever flown with a HMD.

Thats why i was reserving judgement until i got a good look at the LRIP birds.

Now that the pilots STILL are not in a HMD, its pretty much over.

>But this doesnt mean that the J-20 might not be designed with HMDs in mind.

HMDs are not plug and play.

>The existence of a HUD is also no reason, because Chinese design philosophy stresses redundancy.

The issue here is this redundancy would heavily impede the primary items function.

The best you could argue now is the HMD is not the primary, and is the redundancy...which makes it not really worth it.

Without an HMD, it also puts into question the legitmatecy of the "sino eodas".

I fail to see how you could argue that, when, without an HMD, its simply not the same system.

>but the Chinese MIC does produce DAS-styled equipment.

That would be an EO sensor, at first blush, my friend.

DAS would be a perfect sphere of EO/IR coverage, stitched without overlap and capable of long range threat detection and MAW.

My guess was what i originally thought.

The EO/IRST sensor up front its essentially an integrated pod, and provides primarily an IRST function, with secondary ground attack IDENT and targeting. It provides a readout via traditional heads up display, or if in the EO mode for ground attack, on a MFD.

All the rest is a simple IR MAW system like the F-22, you dont benefit from anything more without a HMD.

>>31480392
My issue with this is it is seeing the B-2, with all its thermal stealth, at the same range as the F-22, with not anywhere near as much thermal stealth, which puts the entire info graph into question (even the range estimates on the same infograph)
