For defense? Any would work and arguably something like a S&W Model 500 would be more convenient, but I'd take a 12 gauge with good slugs. For hunting give me the .45-70 with hot ammo, probably not hollow points.

If i were carrying a rifle for bear and bear alone, i'd go with the 45-70.

if i wanted to carry a gun for bear, but not want a rifle, i'd carry a big bore revolver.

if i was carrying a shotgun for a multitude of game, slugs would do the job fine.
