After getting an offer for my Mosin for 350, plus an extra 150 fory last spam can. I decided I want to get Mauser 98 rifle. I figured a pure Nazi one is gonna be expensive but what can I get for that kinda money. More or less 500 total. Also is there any decent surplus ammo out there?

>350 fur a nugget
What happened...
>>
You can probably get a Russian Capture with or without the markings peened off for that price.

For a bring back with or without matching bolt you'll be looking at at least $1,000.
>>
>>31388750
500 will get you an RCed K98K.
Nutshell:
>Russians Captured a shit ton of k98ks
>Tore em down to just barreled recievers
took off the "extra stuff" (sight hoods and locking screws)
>give metal parts horrible bluing
>Put whatever parts/stocks back together
>forcematch with electro pencil
>peen any nazi markings

Still work fine and shoot great though.
>>
>>31388767
Price gougers.

Also my cousin told me about a Cabellas ad for a crate of Mosins that came out to be $300 each
>>
Mismatched Russian captures can still be found for $3-400. Try local gun stores, they filter in now and then. I got lucky recently.
>>
>>31388767
Days of sub $100 nuggets are long gone my friend. My friend sold his M39 last month to the tune of $500 and that schmuck paid $175 for a spam can

>>31388777
Your trips speak volumes. But I was wondering if it's worth it to get an Argentine or a Czech? I'm not a Wehrboo about it, I just want a solid Mauser in 8mm
>>
>>31388767
Supply, demand, economics 101
>>
Get a czech 98. Who cares if its German.
>>
>>31388750
Surplus 8mm Mauser has mostly dried up. There is still some floating about but it is the same price as cheap steel cased moder production. Plus the modern production is not corrosive primed.
If you want a German manufactured Mauser with decently acquirable ammo, look into getting one of the South American Mausers that was converted to 7.62x51 NATO.

mfw almost literally sitting on a can of Romanian 8mm I'm almost afraid to actually open.

I wish I had purchased a shit ton of surplus x25 for $80 a can to later gouge on.

This.

I need myself a lion-crested VZ24, among the many other milsurps that are on my must haves.
>>
>>31388905
>look into getting one of the South American Mausers that was converted to 7.62x51 NATO.

I'm actually going to re-barrel my k98 to 7.62 one day. Last I looked, Walther made 7.62 k98 contour barrels.
>>
>>31389072
I sold off my stockpile of surplus ammo a few years back so I could fund the purchase of my reloading equipment.
Reloading is the only cost effective way to shoot milsurps unless you are sitting on a pile of ammo.

You could probably get a Russian-captured-and-rebuilt Kar.98k. They'll have a dull dip blue or black paint on the force-matched metal parts and red shellac on the stock, and may-or-may-not retain their German proof/acceptance marks. Another alternative is the Yugoslavian Mod.98N or Mod.98/48. These are Kar.98k rifles acquired by Communist Yugoslavia through various means, and re-built in similar fashion to the Russian-captured rifles. One advantage the Yugo rebuilds have is that they often received brand-new barrels during rebuild; conversely, they will have almost all major German markings (including manufacturer's marks) removed, and the crest of the People's Federal Republic of Jugoslavia stamped on the receiver in their place. However, if you want a rifle that otherwise looks and functions just like a original German Kar.98k, it will do just fine. These can usually be had for <$400, so they have that going for them as well.

There are also cheaper M98 rifles chambered in 8x57 available, such as Czech Vz.24 short rifle, which was used in large numbers by Axis forces in WW2. Then there's the Yugoslavian M98 rifles, which were made in large quantities before and after WW2. Models like the M24/47 are pre-WW2 rifles that have been re-built just like the Yugoslavian Kar.98ks, and the M48 is an all-new-production post-war rifle made from 1950-1965.

>Also is there any decent surplus ammo out there?
There is very little surplus 8x57 available from online retailers; most of it got gobbled up during the Great Happening of 2012-2013. You can still find it at gun shows, auctions, private sales, and sometimes smaller gun shops. Romania is still clearing out some of their surplus 8x57, and so occasionally crates and spam cans of that become available, though like with x54R it's not cheap like it used to be.

can those same south american mausers converted to 7.62 RFN handle commercial .308?

im looking at a large ring chilean mauser myself
>>
>>31389162
It's your rifle and it is your choice but as a milsurp collector I would never do that as it destroys the value of the rifle.
If you do rebarrel a mauser, use a Yugo as I don't know many collectors who would cry too much about it and the shorter action would lend itself the the slightly shorter cartridge better.

>can those same south american mausers converted to 7.62 RFN handle commercial .308?
Yeah, no problem, as long as they pass a .308 headspace check. There's no significant difference between 7.62NATO and .308WIN chamber pressure; it's the chamber dimension tolerances that vary enough that you miiight have the weaker .308 brass stretch too much in the more generous milspec 7.62NATO chamber.
>>
>>31389208
I would not feed one a steady diet of heavyweight hunting rounds, but the standard 150-168 range should do fine.
I have a small ring (1895) Chilean Mauser myself. It's one of my best shooters.
>>
>>31389072
I've only got six paper packages of romanian left. I used to really like shooting my mauser. Guess the time has come to choose a new raifu
>>
yugo mausers are sub $300 8mm mauser is about the same price as nugget food
>>
I've heard a lot of Russian Capture K98's are counter-bored. Can someone explain what that is?
>>
whats the point? anything other than an ar-15 weapons platform is a waste of money. stop buying toys and get a real rifle. its an unmatched weapon system with quad rails for attachments and superior ballistics. its the perfect weapon system fucking no guns slavaboo.

>>

Some rifles had a damaged crown, so Ivan decided he would take a drill and create a new crown 1/4"-1" behind the muzzle, they did that to some Mosins too.
>>
>>31389904
I want to jizz on that robot's face.
>>
>>31389208
also looking into NATO ishapores

can anyone vouch if it the enfield action can tolerate commercial .308
>>
>>31388767
I don't fucking know any more for me it used to be I could never find a mauser and all there was were nuggets but now arm lgs they are selling nugs for 400 dollars and fucking k 98s for 250 what the fuck has happened
>>
If anyone's interested in an 8mm M98, Allan Schisel just got a trio of Yugoslavian M24/52C rifles in. These are Czech Vz.24 rifles re-built post-WW2 by Yugoslavia, just like they did with their FN M24 and Kar.98k Mausers.
