Let me get this straight, he hears rustling in the trees, listens a bit harder before seeing some Soviet uniforms breaking up the foliage. Then 30-100 Russian infantrymen appear from the treeline. He might even hear a few tanks rumbling not so far back. He sees them first, aims at the highest density of troops and lets of a burst from his submachine gun. He then takes cover as the Soviet riflemen take cover also before returning fire in his general direction. He's now under fire and cannot raise his head above cover. Maybe he lobs a few grenades over the top, however he is quickly overwhelmed and killed.
What is the point in him being there? He's there just to die?
Pic is Finnish soldier during Russian offensives in 1944.
Not ideal but someone has to look out.

How large were Russian squads?

Hey, at least he has comfy bunker and not tankriding in freezing rain.

Guard duty. To stop or at least alert others of potential enemy attacks.

that is not how war works.
good positions will have a way to retreat in cover. he will not be alone. and the attackers will waste shitloads of ammo and time to take his position
Wow Finland should of sent more than one guy to watch the border then.

This. Also, it's also possible for him to alert other troops instead of opening fire so they can make a larger scale ambush.

You sure about that?

How fast do you think all of this happens? In less than a minute?
The shooting will immediately alarm the other members of his squad who are nearby (most likely in a dugout, or possibly even closer if it's daytime like in the picture you posted), they will rush into position and pour fire into the enemy. If they have the option available, the defenders can also call a mortar strike on top of the attackers fairly quickly. This by the way is why you don't attack fortified positions held by dudes armed with automatic weapons, not without artillery preparation that is.
Even if the situation is so somehow so bad that seemingly no help is coming, the guy can keep his head down and fuck off from his position, seeing as he's clearly in a trench. It will take the enemy at least a little while to realize he's not there, giving him the time to get away.

He's chilling there waiting until he hears they're coming, at which point he alerts everyone else and falls back to the main line, preferably through a concealed route established beforehand. In that way the defenders know that the Russians are coming, where they are coming from, and in what force before they end up at the main line of resistance. Hopefully, he and other like him will be able to discover the enemy's main effort.

War would have probably been over quicker if all the other Finns weren't in his way thp
