I've set up my lathe for turning some nice 63 rockwell bar stock into penetrators. putting a copper jacket on such a thing in a cheap 25t press is also much easier than anticipated.

I'm not really concerned with it breaking. it's just to protect my barrel from the high hardnes and tensile strength steel penetrator. after harening and annealing them, these things are a bitch to work with. I just press them into the copper tubeing and give it a go with a torch after hardening. that anneals the steel and helps forming the copper around it.

Not at all, but M855 was designed to penetrate those things with negligible deviation in trajectory as well as negligible deformation of the projectile. an all lead copper jacketed bullet will either break apart or deform rather drastically before penetrating those things and will see a higher rate of deflection.
