This. Less velocity equals less "stopping power" (oh boy here we go), which can easily be solved by a new projectile designed to work well in SBRs like 77gr OTM, and usually less effective range. An 8 inch barrel will EASILY do work some good work out to 400 yards.

You know what happens when you decide not to buy long term maintenance kits from the manufacturer of your guns? This happens.

Do you really think for a moment that if the Minimi was such junk that it would've been in use in so many countries? It works fine if maintained properly. Especially since countries have started accepting the 7.62x51 minimi version lately, you'd expect that people think they do fine.

Sure, it's not FN MAG or PKM style reliable. But it works.

Zastava made a fun PKM-style 5.56x45 SAW, but I don't think it ever went anywhere. I'd love to get one.
