This is a poor metric. My LGS only keeps a couple thousand specialty rounds on hand. Once again, I think the better approach is to have an informed goal for each caliber you shoot. Personally, I have a lot of rifle ammo, and 9mm but may be a little short on handgun coverage otherwise. What are your goals, and how close are you. How do you nigs have so little ammo? I keep a minimum of 15 mags of green tips, a pile of mags of AK ammo, and a small pile of Glock mags (9 and 10), not including HD mags and reloads scattered about the house. This ammo never gets touched and is separate from my normal storage of ammo.
Do none of you keep mags loaded and ready to go? I would feel very unprepared if all I had was 1 or 2 mags full and the rest in factory boxes.

Realistically 1k per caliber. For SHTF calibers, 1k per weapon in that caliber (i.e. 6x5.56 guns=6k rounds).

I realize a lot of folks might lie about what they have but I don't really care. It's fun to come chat about this stuff in a semi-anonymous way.

Some people are criticizing others who post large ammo counts without photographic evidence. I don't know if they're telling the truth or not, but it's not unbelievable. I have a friend who started off 20-25 years ago owning nothing but a TEC-9, because he didn't know any better. Now he owns probably around a quarter of a million dollars of MGs on form 4s and has two very large safes that are absolutely packed FULL of guns.

He started with a few cases of ammo in the closet under his stairs. Once that closet was completely packed from top to bottom and back to front, he started filling his guest room with stacks of ammo crates and ammo cases, along with some tripods, parts kits and barrels for his MGs.

About the time he filled that room to the point he couldn't walk into it anymore, his son moved out so he started filling up that room. That was over a decade ago and now that room is completely filled, with just a narrow aisle down the center of the room. He has to spend a day moving crates out of the room if he ever wants to get to anything near one of the walls. Luckily, they're basement rooms so the floor won't give way.

I'd guess his ammo count is now well over a million rounds.

I don't advertise what I have, but I'm nowhere near in that guy's category. Not even in my wildest dreams. I probably have more than a lot of people here, but less that the ones posting very large stashes. If my kids remain casual shooters who rarely make trips to the range they may never have to buy ammo again, but if even one of them became an avid shooter I'd probably be out of ammo within a year. So I guess having a "lot" of ammo is a relative thing.

It's a bit of both. If I wanted to do some range trips during a drought, then I could. I could also hand extra ARs out to people I trust along with a couple hundred rounds during SHTF.

If it becomes impossible to get ammo for some reason, having a stockpile avoids lots of problems.

Does anyone else label their ammo boxes with date of purchase and cpr?

Generally I'd want to shoot the oldest and cheapest ammo first so it seemed like a logical thing to do.

how are you guys on 22lr? I haven't bought any since the great run of 2008.

I haven't shot it since then either until recently i shot a little steel match used 50 -80 rounds out of a revovler and it was painful.

can't justify the price anymore though the availability is "okay" not normal before pre 2008.

election panic has made me want to get at least another 500 box or two even though I haven't shot 22lr at all until that one match.
