They're not THAT hard to find, there's a bunch on the NFA registry, they just aren't that desirable because 7.92x33mm isn't cheap enough or plentiful enough in the US to be attractive for someone to fully enjoy the weapon, I've seen MP40s command higher prices than Stg44s simply because it shoots common ammo and uses common magazines, taking that to the range is cheaper and easier.
