Sup /k
I recently helped my family clean out my grandpas garage (WW2 Vet) and we found this bolt action rifle. After some research i found out it is a Type 99 "Last ditch gun" used by japan in WW2. is this thing worth restoring to shooting status? Or is it just pretty looking gun junk at this point that would be a waste of time and money to restore? The barrel end on this is rusted throughout as it has been sitting in a garage for probably 40 years. Bolt goes forward and dry fires. No idea if it will blow to pieces if i ran ammo through it though. Thanks for the advice.
>>
>>31310883
I wouldn't recommend it. Those things have an unsavory rep to begin with and with the barrel rusted like that you'd be asking for trouble.
>>
>>31310917
You wouldn't recommend restoring it or firing it or both?
>>
>>31310883
You already told us the action cycles and it fires. Based on that it's probably restoration-worthy and will make a fine range or hunting gun. Even the last ditch weapons were of high quality, they just lacked in extra features and finish. Arisakas have a reputation for being virtually un-splodeable, although if the rust is deep enough that will be compromised.

What do you mean by "rusted throughout?" All I see is surface rust and that can be easily mitigated with some bronze/copper wool and lots of gun oil. I'd first just coat the metal bits in oil and let it soak in and then pull along the metal with a course rag. That should take care of most of the surface rust. For any harder bits you can oil it up and scrub with a penny. Just be sure to liberally oil it and keep oil between it and the metal.

Post a pic like this and I'll tell you the manufacturer and the series.
>>31310917
All Type 99s are safe to fire.

>>31310883
Take a picture of the bore for us.

Cant take a picture of the bore as i'm not near the gun anymore, i did snap off a picture of the faded chrysanthemum though
>>
>>31311008
That's a 27th series by Tokyo Juki Kogyo (Tokyo Heavy Machinery Manufacturing Corporation). That's an uncommon maker.

It looks in good shape. Just do what I say about the rust. Take it easy and slow and soak it for awhile.
>>
>>31311036
Yikes, that's pretty crusty, but it's still doable.
The mum has been ground off.
>>
>>31311100
I wont lie i have very little experience with cleaning or operating a firearm I was thinking of taking it to my local gun shop and hiving them do the cleaning for me.
>>
>>31311110
Damn shame.
>>
>>31310883
Spray it down with eezox or corrosionx and leave it alone. I'm sure it's safe to fire considering even the worst examples are still shootable but I wouldn't restore it or do anything apart from stopping that rust from spreading. Hang it on your wall.
>>
>>31311188
I was going to put a picture of gramps in a case with it along with a few other war momentos we found at his place. i think this is the best idea.

Your average gunshop won't do it, nor would know how to do it. It's really not that hard to do once you get to know what to do.

All you need is something like this: http://www.brownells.com/gunsmith-tools-supplies/metal-prep-coloring/abrasives/metal-wool/bronze-wool-prod7391.aspx
But first just soak all the metal in a penetrating oil.

You probably want to take it out of the stock for that. Normally, I wouldn't suggest you take the rifle out of the stock as the screws on T99 were factory stacked in place (pic related), but with that much rust it may be under the woodline. Just get a properly fitted screwdriver or you'll beat up the screw heads.
>>
>>31311215
It's what I would do. I'm sure it's shootable and restorable but I don't know why you would. I wouldn't go much further than applying oil to it and wiping the surface off, corrosionx should stop the rusting. It's what I use when I store my guns way and they never rust. Consider I live in Iowa where it's often 100% humidity and they are stored in a basement.
>>
>>31311188
>eezox or corrosionx
I don't think that removes rust.
>>
>>31311260
It's to stop it, rust can easily be removed with something likes flitz and a toothbrush or rag.
>>
>>31311277
They both say rust preventative, not a rust remover.

But really OP, it's not hard to remove. It just sounds harder than it is. It's something you also need to do or it won't last forever.
>>
>>31311348
Thanks for the advice, im gonna snapshot the thread, and take it to a local gun guy. if he says he can do it i will go with that otherwise i'll prep it myself. Thanks for the help
>>
>>31311348
That's just what I said multiple times now m80. Flitz is perfect for removal.
>>31311468
Don't let anyone touch it lest they fuck it up, even gun smiths.
>>
>>31311523
i feel like i should at least take it to a gun shop to get appraised no?
>>
>>31311600
You can if you want. Or you can do it yourself. You would need some headspace gauges. Look for any obvious defects in the receiver - cracks, bolt doesn't lock securely, bolt is fucked up, chamber is fucked up, check headspace. Traditionally, even on the last ditch models, the actions on those Arisakas are quite durable, so it is likely still safe to shoot.
>>
>>31310883
What makes it not shootable? Doesn't sound like you need to "restore" anything.
>>
>>31311600
It's not worth much, especially in that condition.
>>
>>31311711
Just worried that it has been sitting in a garage for 40 years and the experience i have with rifles pretty much ended with the rifle shooting merit badge in boyscouts
>>
>>31311732
It's fine, you're not going to break it without doing so deliberately. And that's gonna take effort.
>>
>>31311752
even if i were to fire it do they make ammunition for something like this anymore? or is it just whatever was manufactured back in the 40s
>>
>>31311600
An average gun shop won't give you an accurate appraisal and if they did they would low ball you.

As a collector of Arisakas I'd value that around $200, to maybe $300 even with the rust problems. It's an uncommon to find gun even with TJK's high survival rate.
>>31311703
>You would need some headspace gauges.
No. All headspace gauges are built to SAAMI specs and they'll be wrong. Headspace isn't even a safety issue.
>>31311712
I disagree.
>>31311792
Yes you can get ammo for it, but it's rather pricey. Horady makes some, but it's like $25 for 20.
>>
>>31311954
Thank you for the feedback. I'm leaning towards just polishing her up and sticking it in a shadow box with some of gramps other war memorabilia, my dad told me he found various knives and bayonets later after i had left. maybe there is one that matches the serial of the gun.
>>
>>31311600
They aren't worth too much. Like I said you can hang it up, maybe turn into a coffee table with glass so people can see it.
>>31311792
You can still find ammo for it. Some LGS might have it but online is usually best source.
>>31312007
For the sake of gramps don't ruin the rifle.

>>
>>31312007
Don't polish, just remove the rust as I stated above. It works. It won't be that pretty underneath, but it'll retain what's left of the original finish.

Bayonets weren't serial numbered to the gun. Their serial numbers were separate.
>>
>>31312062
Will do. Thank you for the advice i really appreciate it.
>>
>>31311954
>but it's like $25 for 20.
still better than it was a year 2 ago when the hornady was $40 a box
>>
>>31310933
I wouldnt do either.not valuable enough to restore.not safe enough to shoot
>>

don't polish it just clean the rust as described here >>31311221

A couple places do but it ain't cheap. Figure around $45 a box. If you plan on shooting it, I suggest reloading.
>>

No fucking...

Well fuck me. I didn't even know PCI or Hornady made it. I thought it was just Norma.

It does, but "last ditch" rifles and trainer models are poorly made and probably unsafe.
