If most of the loudness of a gunshot is due to the crack of supersonic speeds, would a suppressed firearm be virtually BB-gun-silent if it was using subsonic rounds?

Sorry if that's a dumb question, kinda new to all this. Pic related, Russian sniper rifle with integral suppressor designed for subsonic AP ammunition. Special forces need to penetrate 8mm steel with near-absolute silence in Russia I guess.
>>
Yes. That's why big fat subsonic rounds like .45acp or .458 SOCOM or 9x39 are used for secret squirrel assassination missions.
>>
>>31307177
When a gun is fired, there are two sounds, the sound of the bullet breaking the sound barrier, and the air behind it rapidly cooling down.

Subsonic ammunition keeps the bullet within the sound barrier so as not to produce a sonic boom, and a suppressor, mounted or internal, does whatever to prevent the air from coling down behind the bullet.

If you're talking about silencing a weapon to hollywood/videogame tier, probably not going to happen, it's still too loud.
>>
>>31307203

Eh, I'd disagree. Subsonic rounds are fucking super quiet anyways... Most of the time you don't even need earpro.

>If most of the loudness of a gunshot is due to the crack of supersonic speeds

Not really. Most of the blast comes from the muzzle, where gasses are released from the enclosed system of the firearm. Some noise does come from supersonic projectiles, just as some comes from the action of the gun.

A suppressed bolt action .22 with a 20"+ barrel and subsonic rounds would make the least noise. If you want to take it a step further, use .22 colibri
>>
Not OP but why not just turn the sound into something ultrasonic or infrasonic. I don't know how well that'd apply to firearms but in theory you can get something completely silent.
>>
>>31307328
Am OP, supersonic refers to speed of bullet (above mach 1 aka speed of sound, like when an airplane breaks the sound barrier and produces a sonic boom), not the actual tone of the boom.
>>
>>31307225
sure, but no suppressed weapon will ever get as quiet as hollywood's whispered "pew" that is inaudible to someone 10 feet away..
>>
>>31307225
Yeah, totally. I never wear earpro when shooting pistols.
>>
OP again, I know Hollywood's "silencers" are a load of crap, but subsonic+suppressor with say, a .308, should be inaudible to a person, say, 400 feet away, right? BTHP would be an ideal round for killing someone as well at lower velocities, both for increased stability in flight (boat tail) and increased tissue damage with the hollow point expanding?
>>
>>31307500

Depends where they are relative to the barrel of the rifle.
>>
>>31307522
a few stories below, maybe 60-70 feet drop.

maybe not silent at 10 feet away but you can get pretty fucking close

9m59s The gun firing is quieter than the trigger reset

You can make a gun extremely quiet, but using a suppressor is the wrong way to do it. Guns that utilize captive piston ammunition are more or less silent aside from the sound of the action working.
>>
>>31307465
Outoors it is pretty much hollywoods whispered pew, indoors, however, it is much louder.

I'm confused.
In context of this thread this should be suppressed, by ammunition looks like miniature light-gas guns which are used to achieve high velocities.

any resident Russian can translate?

a .22lr pistol or rifle can be silenced to a hollywood/videogame tier

It's partially the reason why the OSS/CIA used .22lr handguns during WW2 and throughout the cold war.

it's a step in the right direction, that's pretty impressive

>>31307500
most rifle BTHP doesn't expand. they behave like FMJ in terms of terminal ballistics.

I think you should use Google translator, because my English is poor. According to my feelings and experience on average, it takes normally.

>>
>>31307177
Yeah, it does make it pretty fucking quiet, the problem is though that it loses a lot of velocity. As far as I know, subsonic rounds aren't even usable with semi-automatics.
>>
>>31314958
You dont know much
>>
>>31307786
What's this about? I can't read cyka blyat.
>>
>>31309824
What?

It's captive piston ammo. Gunpowder is behind piston, when gunpowder is ignited it pushes piston, which pushed bullet. All expanding gas is kept in the cartridge, leaving a weapon whose only noise is the firing pin hitting the primer. In the USA, they are surprisingly not illegal. However, each and every bullet would have to be registered, at a cost of 200$ PLUS 6 months wait, since the cartridge is what does the "silencing"
