Our very first president was The General. Washington fought and won while vastly out-numbered and under-supplied. Congress posthumously promoted him to General of the Armies (six stars, unofficially) in 1976 in celebration of the Revolution.

Andrew Jackson was also a badass, what with beating this shit out of his would-be assassin with a cane and dueling a man for insulting his wife.

Lincoln killed Indians in the Army. He then ordered the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of Americans, however.

Eisenhower was the Second General. He and Washington (and Pershing) were the reasons why Congress and the War Department had to distinguish between "General of the Army" and "General of the Armies." The man understood war, having served in both World Wars.

Kennedy served on a PT boat in WW2. His story is pretty good.

Pretty much nobody after that is worthy.
