Looks like old web gear, maybe 1950s vintage? We had something similar, called ALICE. The snap on the suspender most likely attached to a grommet on the top/rear of the ammo pouch, which was also attached to the pistol belt with clips. We usually wrapped ours with 100mph (duct) tape to keep it closed and quiet.

I figured it out. The strap on the back of the ammo pouch attaches to the rectangular metal bit on the harness while the hook on the harness strap attaches to the belt.

We had the same webbing and belt in Sweden back in the day. Its not issued any more but we got it for free when they replaced them. The belt is pretty good desu and it was better then the intermediate shit they gave us. Get some stripes and you can actually fasten new pouches to that belt pretty good and if you got one of these you can fasten on your chest for some some extra space.

Old as fuck but its decent if you want something lightweight.

M1956 webbing equipment.
The strap on the top of the ammo pouch connects to the square ring on the "H" harness front, where the shoulder pads change to straps.
This takes a portion of the weight of the full ammo pouch, two mags and two M26.
