a folding shovel is standard kit of US army infantry. we all get trained to dig basic 1-4 man entrenchments and most units have an engineer that can coordinate more complex fortifications.

My favorite meme about the eastern front is that the winters were what really screwed the Germans. Nigga, if you were in an army on the steppe, the winter was the least of your problems.

No, it wasn't the snow or the cold, but the mud. Late spring/Autumn rains would turn any road in Russia into seemingly infinite rivers of brown goop. Panzers and trucks would bog down, soldiers would get stuck, and advances would slow to crawls. Try supplying an army through this.

Ironically, there were many times during winter when the ground thawed and this happened, and they had to wait until it refroze so panzers could move. But then again, they didn't do well in the cold either.

They also make an ok melee weapon if you find yourself in that situation. I believe the waffen SS used them in that role sometimes.

Literally 20 tanks vs equivalent infantry? That's like almost two companies based on 20 tanks.
So infantry equivalent is 2 companies usually made up of three rifle platoons and a heavy weapons platoon.

Dig in, Not like tank main guns will be really good at infantry. Coaxial and secondary weapons are shorter range. Tanks might not even see infantry unit till close. Infantry would probably see tanks way further away. Tanks really cannot dismount and dig out infantry. Infantry unit probably has man portable AT weapons so tanks will have to stay away. Tanks that close to engage will present sides to dug in infantry. And meanwhile infantry is calling in airstrike/artillery. If they are in defensible position probably will have minefield and utilizing terrain features. They would be a tough target if they were competent.
