Despite its silliness Halo is fairly accurate military sci-fi on the future of warfare (from the UNSC side).

The Longsword itself is so large because it's designed to launch into orbit.
>>
>>31199990
The gun being on top of it is so stupid for a orbital gunship. Needs to be belly-mounted

It's actually far better than the long word at being a space superiority fighter. The longsword seems more like a bomb truck for long range missions than for dogfighting or even intercepting.

>VF-4 = F-14
>Longsword = B-2
>Viper Mk II = F-16
>K-wing = A-10

So what sci fi craft is the F-15?
>>
>>31201864
>The F-4's biggest weakness, as it was initially designed, was its lack of an internal cannon. For a brief period, doctrine held that turning combat would be impossible at supersonic speeds and little effort was made to teach pilots air combat maneuvering. In reality, engagements quickly became subsonic, as pilots would slow down in an effort to get behind their adversaries. Furthermore, the relatively new heat-seeking and radar-guided missiles at the time were frequently reported as unreliable and pilots had to use multiple shots (also known as ripple-firing), just to hit one enemy fighter. To compound the problem, rules of engagement in Vietnam precluded long-range missile attacks in most instances, as visual identification was normally required. Many pilots found themselves on the tail of an enemy aircraft but too close to fire short-range Falcons or Sidewinders. Although by 1965 USAF F-4Cs began carrying SUU-16 external gunpods containing a 20 mm (.79 in) M61A1 Vulcan Gatling cannon, USAF cockpits were not equipped with lead-computing gunsights until the introduction of the SUU-23, virtually assuring a miss in a maneuvering fight. Some Marine Corps aircraft carried two pods for strafing. In addition to the loss of performance due to drag, combat showed the externally mounted cannon to be inaccurate unless frequently boresighted, yet far more cost-effective than missiles. The lack of a cannon was finally addressed by adding an internally mounted 20 mm (.79 in) M61A1 Vulcan on the F-4E.[46]

Sounds relevant to me.

>I guess the B2 doesn't exist then? Flying wings are now fantasy?
Different anon here:
Compare the B2 with that, look carefully at how smooth the B2 is and then realize it's a subsonic aircraft. So since the Longsword is absolutely supersonic you need compare actual supersonic aircraft to it and how neatly they conform to area rule. Oh, what's that? You didn't know about area rule?

Look up the Sears-Haack body for starters, but basically it's a long, cylindrical body that comes to a sharp point at either end. Every single high speed aircraft conforms to area rule and tries to emulate a Sears-Haack body from nose to tail. Without that there would be absurd wave drag which would likely just tear the aircraft into tiny pieces the moment it hit a tenth of a bar of air pressure. (remember, these things fly in atmospheres) Surface drag is another major factor, the Longsword is full of dumb sci-fi doodads that give it an absurd surface to area ratio and every single one of those little bits and pieces would encounter a lot of friction, heat up, and likely cause a failure.

Like most everything else in Halo it's cheap sci-fi without any real science.
