I wouldnt get any of the short mags. They really limit what the rifle can be should you need to swap it. A short action with large bilt face can only accommodate other short mags, of which all but 300wsm have died or nearly died

i want the option of taking long range elk at 300y+ but mostly long range paper 800y+

i know 300wm is ubiquitous but im worried it might be a little overkill and that 7mm rem mag will be funner to shoot paper

A friend who guides in northern Alberta bought a t3 in 6.5x55 three years ago. He's dropped a few elk and deer with it and is 100% sold on the caliber. OP'S 300 yards for elk is 100% doable with it.

The 7mm rem mag drops all big game animals nicely. It's a little on the heavy side for whitetail, but they drop dead with 139gr. Not much meat loss either.
300win mag packs a heck of a punch. It's more used for heavier big game (elk, Rudolph, etc.), but it'll take down whitetails no problem at the expense of meat.
300wsm is retarded. Don't fool around with them.
