Not the anon you are asking but people like myself who missed the boat on getting a good quality brand new Russian AK for under a grand is pretty much scrambling to find a substitute that might have to engage targets under 200 yards that will need a round with a big enough punch that won't severely over penetrate like the .308/7.62 NATO.

With that said that's why I went with the .300BLK and its real easy to suppress, I use the same mags, BCG, practically everything minus the barrel, the only real expense is the factory ammo or the time it takes me to load my own.

It wouldn't break my heart to grab my ar15 in a bad scenario. Its about gear too, right? I mean if I grab my ar I'm gonna grab my gear set up for it. So I could maintain it to a degree.

I like my ak rifles cause I wouldn't care beating them up. The extra weight wouldn't bother me unless I had to use my Yugo sks. My ak rifles, some milled, don't feel heavy hiking around.

Just depends on the gear I have, the situation, and I may just say ar15 and my glock17 not cause I'm in love with em but odds say ammo and mags will be easier to find.

One thing people often don't talk about for SHTF is spare parts. Assuming theres little to no spare parts the AK is the obvious choice as ARs need a steady supply of parts to stay functional over long periods. Yep. I would. I have a Colt AR. I have fed it whatever is available, cleaned it rarely, lubed it with a CLP squirt occasionally, and it has performed admirably. It is amazingly accurate and I have a dozen mags that all fit with no rattle. It is solid and reliable. I could not be more pleased.

Most of the parts that are easy to fuck up like the FCG, dustcover, furniture, selector, gas tube, front sight post, etc... Are pretty much compatible with standard AKM's and stuff. It's only the bolt and bolt carrier that you really have to worry about. Anything else would require gunsmithing that you probably won't be able to do in WROL/SHTF. Personally I'd just build those AK-74 parts kits into rifles and keep a few things of replacement springs and a few spare extractors, firing pins, and all the little bits.
