My Son loves History and His birthday is coming up, He's turning 18 and I want to get him a Historic Gun. He really loves WW1 and WW2 so I thought the Lee Enfield Mk 3 SMLE is a good choice, what does /k/ think?
>>
>>31156558
I think... you're a pretty good dad?
>>
Not a bad choice, id recommend something that fires a more affordable cartridge.
>>
>>31156558
Phenomenal choice.
Also that pic is of an Ishapore .308, not a SMLE.
Just make sure he buys his own ammo because .303 is stupidly expensive now.
>>
>>31156558
thats an ishapore, but lees are excellent rifles all around. like all milsurp, though, ammo is expensive
>>
>>31156558
Thats great put you posted an Ishapore 2A1 which is a .308 enfield. Not a WW1 No1 Mk3. if thats what you were going for
>>
>>31156558
I wish I had you as my dad. Also I agree with what >>31156572 said. Perhaps an M1 carbine?
>>
>>31156572
.303 isn't that terrible though, and being a collectible war rifle is part of the charm.
>>31156558
Do you know how to inspect rifles for condition - checking the bore, making sure the action cycles well, looking for any missing parts, etc? Don't buy sight-unseen, and if you order one online shipped to a gun store make sure everything is in order before you accept the transfer and send it back if there's something wrong.
>>
>>31156558
Your son or your wife's son?
>>
No matter what that's fucking awesome, but it depends on ehat you think he'd like. I'd get a Mauser or a Garand, but the Lee Enfield woukd also be great. Are you like apologizing for something or are you just nice?
>>
>>31156586
>>31156587
>>31156588
>>31156590
Whoops, this is the one I read about, I read this was a common gun used by the Allies in the Great War.
>>
>>31156598
We live in Australia so Guns are really hard to get, but I found a place that does really nice replicas legally. I still need a permit though.
>>31156603
I played a pretty important role in his conception so Me and My Wifes Son
>>
>>31156622
yup thats the one. Although that is an earlier version with the volley sight thing on the side.

I think its a Mk2?
>>
>>31156633
http://www.jasperco.com.au/products/303/303.htm
This was the place I was going to get it from.
>>
>>31156605
Maybe its a HS graduation present.
>>
>>31156622
you might have trouble finding that certain model in decent condition in your area. that said, every model of lee is historic and they all work well. pretty much all milsurp is only available on the secondary market these days.

learn how to inspect a bore and make sure the rifle is in good condition, then check out any local gun shows. thats your best bet

Ah. yes being in upside down land does limit your choices and fucks your ammo prices too. any of the bolt action guns from the war are pure sex and too my knoweldge are legal in the kangaroo kingdom

pic is my war collection which ill pass on to my wifes son when I have one. ignore the zulu hole maker, AK and XDm. they made it into the photo somehow
>>
>.303
>stupidly expensive
its like fucking $13 a box, how the fuck is that expensive?
>>
>>31156632
Just making sure.
>>
>>31156605
Its His 18th Birthday and we don't know what to get him.
>>
>>31156644
thats just a replica, and an expensive one at that.
>>
>>31156662
Mate those are really cool
>>
>>31156667
Because it's not air soft pellets
>>
>>31156673
why do you have to get him anything
>>
>>31156676
Yeah I only want a replica. Tough laws here plus the misses doesnt like guns at all so its a compromise.
>>
Get it. My dad bought me a nagant when I was turned 16 and it was the fucking tits. I'll keep shooting that thing until I die or give it to my kids.
>>
>>31156683
>>31156667
you want to know how i know you guys dont practice with your firearms regularly?

>>31156685
gotcha.
>>
Get him a nugget

This is the SMLE No1 Mk3 in that pic with a period correct p1907 bayonet. It was made in 1917 in England at the B.S.A.

Since your Australian the SMLE's you're gonna see are most likely Lithgow which was the aussie domestic producer of the rifles. So you'll be givin your kid a piece of war history and your countries history if you find a Lithgow.
>>
>>31156684
cos its his birthday. Birthday present. We love him. He's our youngest child.
>>
>>31156686
Thats a nice legacy to your father. I have my dad's WWII Bomber Jacket my dad gave it to me when I got married. So Cool
>>
>>31156685
wait is that replica fire able? or are you just getting a REALLY expensive pretend time toy?

cause at 600 kangaroo bucks just dig around for a real war relic like >>31156702
>>
>>31156632
Who does the replicas?
>>
>>31156558
First off, OP I really think what you're doing is great for your son. I wish my dad shared the same enthusiasm with me.
An Enfield would be nice, maybe if you've got the extra money get him a Garand!
>>
>>31156811
Way to miss the entire thread bud

OP is Australian and appears to be buying a non working replica.
>>
>>31156725
this
op pls respond
>>
>>31156632
>I played a pretty important role in his conception so Me and My Wifes Son
I don't think he counts as being your son if all you did was cheer your wide and her partner one while they had sex.
>>
If you're going to get a replica, might as well save some money and get him a really well made airshit.

Save the money to get him an actual gun whenever he can legally own one down the road.
>>
You can't even own long rifles in australia?
>>
>>31156558
i think a m3 smelly is an excellent choice. i want one as well, i've got 2 98k, a mosin-nagant, a carcanno, the smelly and the garand is what i'm still working on. get him a smelly. or get me one. and don't worry that it's .303, that's history dammit. it's not meant to shoot constantly
>>
>>31156963
>it's not meant to shoot constantly
nigger do you even mad minuet?
>>
>>31156976
>minuet
fucking phone
>>
>Replica bolt actions

Why live you poor kangaroo fuckers?

Can you own black powder guns?
Ones that shoot lead bullets?
>>
>>31156976
>nigger do you even mad minuet?
i didn't mean in war you moron, i mean in my backyard. point was, .303 british may be expensive but you don't have to constantly blast it out. it's a historical war relic. does that make any sense to your tiny mind?
>>
>>31157015
no cause im not poor and can shoot as much .303 as I fucking want
>>
>>31157017
well then fine, blow it out all you want. i'm also not poor. i just don't blast away just to make noise. i've got a cache of 7.92 x 57 greek and some really old nazi ammo. i've got a lot of old russian 7.62 x 54R. but that doesn't mean i just blow it all away. some folks are a little more controlled than that. but you do whatever you want

"hurriedly googling what the fuck 7.92 x 57 and 7.62 x 54R is"
>>
>>31157049
what exactly is that supposed to mean? not sure, is that supposed to make me fell dumped on in some way?
>>
>>31156691
>you want to know how i know you guys dont practice with your firearms regularly?
I see what youre implying there, but $13 box for reloadable new production brass case isnt expensive at all. I could use steel and get that price down to below $10, but then I wont be able to reload later.
You want to hear about expensive ammo? Try a Martini Henry, even reloads cost over a buck a round and you have to form your own case, same goes for snider enfields if you use brass instead of plastic shotshells.
On the commercial side, Ive got a Chilean m95 mauser chambered in 7.65 Argentine, even privi is $1 a round, the original 7mm mauser chilean mauser 95's are usually chambered in is just as bad. Or 7.7 Jap, $30 a box if you can find it.

so yes, $10-15 a box is cheap for me. and I still probably shoot my rifles more often than you dirty up your poodle shooter palmetto AR.
>>
>>31157074
>I could use steel and get that price down to below $10, but then I wont be able to reload later.

finally another reloader, the voice of reason. good man, damn good man
>>
so, are we done here?
>>
>>31157072
Not him, but
>finishes a conversation
>gets butthurt when the conversation is finished

>>31157277
Not unless OP tells us if he's getting a working replica or just a wallhanger.
It seems like he's too cucked for the former, though.
