Assault rifles are much more complex than shotguns, as long as you're turning a rifle into a shotgun that's relatively easy.
Turning a shotgun into an automatic rifle is less easy, although that depends largely on what kind of shotgun it is. It's easy to downgrade something, upgrading is the hard part.

A PPSh is direct blowback, it couldn't really handle any larger calibres.

Other gas-op design's could easily change between shottie, smg, rifle, just look at the Kalashnikov.

I also get WHY they did this when they put it this way, but it seriously bugs me that they called it an "assault rifle" and not just a "LMG", there's no honest need to call it an assault rifle.

All the guns in this game pissed me the fuck off.

FNV (and F3), had cool guns, (great in the case of NV).
Almost every gun in F4 looks and behaves like shit.

Minigun looks and sounds awesome, but does fuckall damage.

All automatic weapons are super gimped in the damage department, making you have to take all 5 levels of autos, and all 5 levels of scrounger just to feed them.

Most of the guns look like shit or are retarded. (fuck the "assault rifle")
