Level III is good enough, III+ is a company thing not a fixed ballistic protection standard so it varies. Side plates restrict your movement.

I'd run level III with soft armor backers

If I got two level IV plates and stick them together, would it make one level VIII plate?

i would recommend 2 plate carrier set ups

1.) defensive PC ( you can afford to have this be the heavier plate) no side plates, enough mags/etc, if you Cannot leave the area this is fine, might as well carry all you need.

2.) mobile PC ( soft armor front, soft armor in back) 2-3 rifle mags at most 1-2 pistol mags, keep it light and easy to move in. dont stop moving.

I'd recommend an affordable but good chest rig first
Otherwise IV and side plates are up to you.
If you're in an urban area don't forget to consider lower level soft armor or lower level soft armor and IV plates.
Fuck steel plates don't fall for the meme like I did.

Get something modular that will scale up/down depending on the situation. I would suggest a concealable armor carrier that can also accepts plates. You can't go wrong with triple curve lvl IV plates. Add side-plates and/or a helmet if you have the money. Plan for everything. Swift clips are a good idea IMO, but get a harness so you can wear the rack by itself.

The GWOT has really pushed advancements in the industry. There are things coming out that are VERY durable and light weight. I really don't understand people who buy 10 upper receivers because of a salt weapon ban, 1,000's of rounds of ammo in every caliber, but don't even have a basic plate carrier. Unless things change, it WILL be banned eventually. Maybe not before a weapon ban, but you really never know, do you? There have been talks about armor bans in the past, and it's the type of thing that most people don't care about. I really don't see that sort of legislation passing with very much dissent from the public at all. Fortunately, it doesn't seem to be on Washington's radar. That could change with just ONE high-profile shooting involving the shooter wearing ballistic armor. And once it is outlawed for civilians your chance will be gone forever. So when you think about it that way, extras aren't a bad idea. Once it's gone, you will wish you had bought more. You really can't have too much.

They're bretty nice. I bought them on impulse and have them laying around until I can have custom pouches made for them. I imagine that they would be great covering the rear sides where regular side plate coverage stops to protect from spinal shots. They also definitely could be used as upper/lower hard armor for the arms/legs.

If you're in an area where you expect people to be using ARs and m193 rounds, go for Level IV.

m193 out of a 20" barrel WILL penetrate Level III and "III+" plates quickly. If you're going to go all out on plates may as well get side plates as well if you can handle the additional weight.

Considering you said this is local SHTF and I suppose you expect to bunker down in one location, there is no harm in protecting yourself as best you can. Get some armor over those vitals, take a seat, wait it out.
