Is it a bad idea to only wear sneakers for when SHTF? If I went innawoods with just sneakers, would that be a bad idea? If so, can anyone recommend me a good pair of boots?
>>
>>31104009
Lace up ariat boots.
~$160
Lace up Justin boots.
~$100

Don't get steel toe. Don't get wolverine, the sole falls off, I've had it happen.

Only bought Justin for quite awhile. Just got these ariats. I like them, justin make them cheaper but just as good.

Pull on boots come off when running, and when in mud. But they are easier to warerproof. Lace ups have a tendency to let water in through the toung, but provide ankle support and flexibility.

What ever you get grab a can of mink oil too, oil them.
>>
>>31104009
Salomon or Oboz boots are amazing
sneakers are going to be fairly miserable when wet, or carrying a pack, have no ankle support, and the tread is far from ideal for the terrain.
>>
>>31104009
>>31104158
>have no ankle support
this is the biggest issue.
>>
>>31104053

> mink oil

Oh, fuck yes. I don't consider my boots fully worn in until I've smeared at least a can of weasel grease into them.
>>
>>31104009
Get some wellies for the true innawood experience.
>>
What's /k/s opinion on MCBs the Army RFI gives to Afghanistan chodes? I like the wide soul, 69 bucks for a newish pair is good, but they are only 8 inches high or so, ankle support doesn't look too good.

What rough terrain boots does /k/ recommend with a wid soul and good support?
>>
>>31104053
>Don't get wolverine, the sole falls off, I've had it happen.

Why is fucking impossible to find 4E wide boots?
>>
>>31104281
>Why is fucking impossible to find 4E wide boots?
Because you live in a nation of small-footed people.
>>
>>31104266
Ankle support is a meme. If you are a healthy, active person with minimal levels of athleticism, your ankles function better on their own and excessive support leads to tissue atrophy.

Issue boots are 9 inches tall and I'd kill to get away with cushion soled hikers or other shorty boots.
>>
>>31104009

Plenty of ppl go into the woods with sneakers. Why there a billion fucks who advertise their shit for off trail hiking / running.

You'll be fine, stop being a bitch and look out for any thing that can roll your ankle.
>>
>>31104009
Asolos, BREAK THEM IN. You can't just buy boots and leave them on a shelf in the box. You will hurt your feet when you need them. Go innawoods before you NEED to ya cuck

>>
>>31105981

Nah, I'm a guy who has been doing the Army thing long enough to know that a lot of what is preached contributes to the problems it's supposed to solve. Ankle support is one such thing.
>>

>dieing

>>
>>31104053

>Don't get steel toe.

Wouldn't this be useful especially in an urban environment?
>>
>>31106521

I grew up with high arches and terribly weak ankles. I followed all the rules on ankle support in shoes only to be injured repeatedly. After weight training and running for years with minimal type shoes, I've got the healthiest, most pain free feet of my life, even in the Army. I'd never wear "supportive" shoes again voluntarily.
>>
>>31108616

It's useful in a stationary environment. Any time you need to move quickly or with agility, it's a recipe for pain.

This, you aren't doing SHTF in an active warehouse, steel toe is heavy, won't give you any meaningful protection out of wearing it over non steel toe.
You aren't going to set a double stacked pallet of APC 1500KVA UPSes on your feet in the woods.

>>
>>31105903
Guy who asked here.

I am not that retarded. Like >>31105981is implying, ankle support is hardly a meme. It's the literal difference of rolling an ankle or not. Are you at risk wearing pt shoes in a platoon ruckmarch at 0630 ruckmarch down battalion Ave? Probably not.

But climbing mountains requires more than low profile hiking boots with poor ankle a. Back to the MCB comparison, they are significantly shorter than standard army Bellevue, Nike, Rocky boots etc.
>>
>>31104009

My go to boot is Belleville 390s, but they are super traditional styled. I like them because I have one super comfy pair that I've had resoled twice. They don't breathe super well in the summer, but are really water resistant unless the water comes into the ventilation holes pretty high up the boot. But for stream crossing and such, great.

As for your question, go out innawoods with your tennis shoes. You are going to find they are super slippery on grass and leaf litter. Try taking a steep hill in tennis shoes, or more fun, going back down one.

Boots need nice, tough, nubby rubber soles to give you grip. Especially WHEN you need to grab your totally tactical BOB that weighs 97 pounds and hike on terrain. Without boots you will slip down the ground twist your ankle, fall on your ass and break your coccyx then fall in a stagnant pond and drown.

Don't be that guy.
>>
>>31108710
From experience, I have moved over rough terrain under load in vibram five fingers. I've landed wrong, bent my foot sideways, and kept going because of how I've developed my feet. And I've done this many times. My normal uniform wear are mini-mils with the heel cups removed, and I'm doing way better than the guys in over built danners on average. Better to improve your body than try to compensate for it.
>>
>>31104222
This

A good pair of waterproof Wellington's where the upper is sewn onto the sole and immediately put some dr. Sholls work insoles in them.
>>
>>31104009
You don't want to roll an ankle in the middle of the forest do you anon?
>>
>>31105903
Have fun with your rolled ankles.
>>
>>31109259
Going ten years strong. It works for me.
>>
Sneakers are for jamming your foot into something comfy for flat, predictable, boring ground. Like everyone is suggesting, boots are good because they give support.

You could go the opposite direction and get something simple like a plimsoll shoe (basic sandshoes, like Converse shoes), which offers no support, which is also good because it lets you do what your feet should naturally do, except with the added bonus of your sole not getting cut up. Other simple footwear would be okay too, like sandals, thongs, rock climbing shoes, etc.

It's that mid-point that is particularly bad, where you're giving your foot into the assumptions of the shoe designer and their intended use cases, because a sneaker shoe is supposed to be a specialised type of footwear, not worn for every circumstance.
>>
>>31109369
I forgot to mention, one advantage of sandals and other open footwear, is because the socks are allowed to air-dry, you cut down the risk of trench-foot in humid climates while still remaining stylish and warm.

Sup /k/ don't feel like making another thread about this but I have a pair of these. Would they be good for a SHTF scenario?

Only major con I can tell is that they are really fucking heavy. Each boot weighs 4 pounds, I measured them on my scale in my bathroom.
>>
>>31108657
I wouldn't suggest them. If you like the Kobra boots get danners, Salomon quest 4ds or whatever are what I want to get in the near future.

>>
>>31104009
Depends on what you want, but if you're hiking with a pack on your back or in the woods with sneakers here's what will happen in order of likelihood.
>1. Rolled ankle
>2. Wet feet
>3. Something through the sole
Boots require good socks and breaking in though. You can get away with light hiking in sneakers if you watch your footing, but it's generally a good idea to have ankle protection.
>>
>>31109445
Speaking as someone who hikes in sandals this man would be very sorry with his choice if he did more than a mile. Those buckles are great blister makers and while he is wearing socks those that don't get eaten by mosquitoes.
>>
>>31111059
Does the height of the ankle protection matter all that much? Say, would low ankle protection be less practical than high ankle protection?
>>
>>31108700
HNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNG
>>
>>31111073
When most people say ankle protection they mean a shoe that covers the entire ankle. Doing so forces your ankle into a steady position and prevents it from getting rolled. So long as you can't roll it you're fine. There are plenty of boots to choose from. I use a pair of hiking boots when I go out, but what you need is totally related to where you'll use them. Don't forget you will need to break in almost every boot on the market which means short trips. Don't be the fool who doesn't break in his boots.
>>
>>31111097
>Don't be the fool who doesn't break in his boots.

>>31111107
Breaking in just means wearing them in so they give you flex. Most boots come pretty stiff.

>>31111154
I mean some boots are soft enough to get away with it, but at the end of the day. Your feet are important. Why take the chance.

>>
