Holy shit /k/

I just found out you can buy Migs in this country for under a million dollars. You can literally purchasing a flying MIG-17 or MIG-21 for around the price of a new house. You can even buy a MIG-29 for around 5 million but I would never be able to afford that.

...I think I have a new ambition in life guys. I can't believe I live in a country where I can own an iconic warplane that goes 1,300mph.
>>
That would be awesome to own. There are also Saab Drakens that you can buy if that is more your style. If I was rich enough, buying and flying fighter planes is certainly something I'd want to do.

Totally man. My goal is to get a private pilot's license in the next year. I've always loved aviation and been obsessed with planes. Looking through online ads, my mind is blown that you can buy old warbirds for not that cheap.

When I was a kid my dream was to be a fighter pilot but liberal brainwashing screwed that up. However if I could own a fighter plane as a civilian, that would be a dream.

The Draken is the sexiest airplane. That would be amazing to fly.

Does anyone have any knowledge or experience with buying or flying old warbirds?

Don't forget about the cost of fuel, maintenance, qualified technicians to do said maintenance, all the endorsements + training to fly a single-engined jet aircraft, and hangar rental costs. Every hour of flight costs at least $1000.

It seems worth it if you can swing it.

No you can't. It would be essentially impossible to get certified, insured, and clearing to fly a mig-21.

There is a reason richies aren't doing it.

They do though. There's actually a decent-sized community of civvie warbird pilots. Just the other day I drove past my local municipal airport and saw a fucking F-4 Phantom parked on the runway.

I wonder how much it would cost to buy one un-molested from a third-world country's airforce and fly it around said third world country strafing pre-designated targets all day...

That'd be a pretty fucking rad vacation.

This. There is SOOOO much more to owning a plane than just buying it. Goddamn things are money pits. You'll easily spend a Glock worth on parts and fuel/other incidentals in a month assuming you fly regularly. Do NOT get a plane unless you have shitloads of disposable income, even after buying and shooting guns on the regular.
T. We have a plane.

Same. I can easily handle the financial side of acquiring and running a Hind, but finding qualified technicians to perform maintenance on it is quite difficult.

This is all old news.

Several years ago, a friend and I bought 2 L-29s in connex boxes. Didn't really do anything with them, we sold them after a couple years. They were dirt cheap.

Also, it's the ejection seats and insurance that get you. Not so much maintenance or engines.
You can travel to Bulgaria and buy all the engines you want, for any plane, for about 5 grand a piece, plus shipping. That is a steal. Because an engine overhaul would cost around 1 mil.
Also,
Look at Controller and Trade-a-plane. There's some drakens for sale.

Pic related is the only civilian flying Hind in the US. Or was, I don't know if someone else brought more into the country.

Just set the contract with the DGA (& DCNS if you want the Navy version), and remember to offer them those sweet kickback bribe to ensure swift treatement of your order.

Simple as that. And having a fuckton of monies.
>>
>>31090443
this was a while ago, and ofc it depends on the individual one.

this article lists one for 150k. higher than i remember but maybe this one is in better shape than the one i saw, or was produced more recently.

Are you speaking hypothetically, or from experience?
>>
>>31090512

What do you think? Like every frenchmen I have a Rafale in my backyard to paveway frog ponds just right.

The French developement/procurement offices are notoriously corrupted, just look at the Paki Submarine contract to see what i'm speaking of.

> Bribe their way into gaining contract
> Deal includes kickback bribes to paki officials
> For some reason the french govt decides to stop paying said bribes (upcoming election iirc)
> Said Pakis officials are pissed off, they send a suicide bomber to blow up a bus full of French engineers working on Pakis subs.
> Kickback bribes most probably returned.

TL:DR gib monies we need fancy wine.
>>
>>31091031
You'd think bribing the Pakistani would be unnecessary if they're so bloody desperate it buy the subs that they're prepared to bribe the seller to get them. This whole thing smells of half remembered tabloid front pages.

OP, I have a little bit of stick time in Stearmans and B-25s. If you want to get a Warbird, get your PPL and learn to fly a Stearman, T-6, or T-28. A Mig-21 will be too expensive for you.

>Buying the aircraft.
Anywhere from $80-200k

>learning to fly it
You'll have to learn how to fly Jet aircraft, getting approval from the FAA as a new pilot to fly a high performance, ex-Soviet, military Interceptor will not be easy

>Paying to learn how to fly it.
Quick research shows that most Mig-21 pilots first learn how to fly L-39s, then move onto the MIG. at an average of about $3000 cost/hr for learning both aircraft, expect to spend $50,000 just on getting certified to fly it (not including being away from work and all that bullshit to go out to Nevada and take lessons).

>Annual/monthly/hourly maintenance.
Depends how much you fly. Some guy online says that for 25hr/yr, you'll be looking at ~$150,000. For 75hr/yr it'll be closer to $375,000.

My first flight instructor was actually in the process of restoring an ex-Polish Mig-21 twin seater. He was a fairly accomplished, retired Naval Aviator was had a potential contract flying as an aggressor for ACM training.
Pic related, his mig.
