The Ruger SR40 has been reviewed as one of the softest shooting of the caliber, and it's fairly cheap. Other than that you can get a used .40 Glock all day long, though if it's gen two I'd get a new barrel.

That being said, there really isn't a bad pistol in .40 these days. Back in the 90's I'd steer you clear of, say, Hi-Powers in the caliber, but they've got it fixed good now.

Also, to piggyback on this post, Glock 10mm's will chamber and fire .40's safely without modification. It'll headspace off the extractor and, in all cases I've seen, function perfectly. You might want to look into that if you want a really pleasant shooting .40.

I wouldn't try that in a 1911 or any other design that has weaker extractors.

Any well known brand will suffice. I've had HK's, Glocks, Sigs, Smith's, and even a hi-power in 40, and have liked them all for different reasons. Anyway, think Glock 23 size or bigger, and you'll be fine.

The trick to 40 is to avoid the tiny compacts.

I think HK has better barrels than sig. They use a true polygonal rifle that is fantastic and the grip, angle and shape, of the HK is really great. They're very accurate nice guns but the Sig does feel plusher to shoot. It's a great shooting gun and it's a lot sexier.

I'm 40, so I couldn't buy my first handgun until I turned 21 in 1996. I want to give you a snap shot what being a young gun buying American male looked like, specifically relating to the endless 9mm vs 40 war.

The 40 caliber was hailed as the greatest bullet advancement of all time. By 1996 standards, this is what the gun buying world looked like.

I don't know what to tell you, it's just how the world worked. It was considered a "pussy round" and stories of people getting shot a dozen times before stopping were everywhere. It could "glance" of a skull or rib. It's less powerful than a 38 (people said it). America was still mad at the Beretta switch. Really, dropping the 1911 made people mad. Sure, it was all gun shop and gun magazine talk, but that's all there was.
