I'm not, but I have been looking at getting into fencing. Something I always wanted to learn and I need some new hobbies anyway, so maybe I'll take inspiration from your post and go do that.

Yes, because the professionals that are in the spoopy secret squirrel units don't spend an insane amount of time on the range or rehearsing before an operation.

You're better than that anon.

I took Kendo for one semester in college and it was all it took to convince me that Jimmy Kimmel was right when he said on The Man Show: "There are only two types of people who do martial arts: Asians and psychos." I shit you not, the guy who ran the martial arts curriculum at my school was some Japanese dude nobody ever saw. You had to earn the right to see him or something. There was also this weird camp that a handful of people in the class went to one weekend. When they got back, they swore they saw aforementioned Japanese guy crush a gun with his bare hand. What's more, once "Kendo Camp" happened, those who didn't go got treated like shit. I'll also never forget the time the crazy lady who taught our class busted out a real sword and did step exercises across from one of the students who just had their shinai.

Much later, I told some guy who was into Kendo about all this shit and he was fucking flabbergasted. He said he was really sorry that I was exposed to a cult and swore up and down that it's not normal and to give it another chance. I dunno. Maybe the Western stuff isn't like that. Maybe even Kendo isn't supposed to be that bad, but I'm soured on martial arts in general after having all that bullshit be my introductory experience with it. If that's the way it's supposed to be and I'm not man enough for it, then oh well, fuck you, Bruce Lee.

Despite being less useful than guns and less concealable than knives, they are surprisingly useful once you take a course in any kind of sword fighting.

There's a lot of tactics that don't really come to mind before actually seeing them.

If you ever have the chance to take a course, try doing it out of interest - even if you despise swords.

I'm thinking about getting an albion longsword/hand and a half, anyone recommendations/suggestions?
>>
>>31061536
Not the same anon but,
Lots of small different things technically, quite a good deal in terms of concepts.
Lichtenauer's uses few stances (4-5), three basic blows, five special blows that can "break" guards. And then lots of specific stuff for specific situation, winding in a cross of blades, hip-throwing rather than doing arm-manipulations. There is a difference between armored fencing and unarmored.

Fiore doesn't differenciate armored / out of armor that much, there are about 20 different stances, though some are redundant. Blows are simple, but applications are very varied, simple but subtle. It's more defensive in nature as you will wait for the enemy whereas Lichtenauer is more about gaining and keeping the initiative.
Fiore has more weapons (dagger, poleaxe, mounted fencing, wrestling, sword in one hand) and they form a coherent whole.
There's a difference between long range fencing (wide play) and short range (close play).
Fiore doesn't like to cross his arms and legs, Lichtenauer does it all the time.

>>
>>31061616
short version: (because I cant be arsed with the long one)

yes, holding the blade is a method used - against plate harness. (Harnischfechten).

Saying that "to stab" you have to do that is utterly wrong; a longsword is desgined to be able to use both cut and thrust, and will skewer through an unarmoured target without any effort at all.

you do not need to use harnischfechten techniques in blossfechten

Fiore likes to grab the wrist or the elbow of the opponent, if your arm or wrist is crossed at that time, you can be manipulated and disarmed much more easily. Since Fiore likes this, he also advise against crossing the forearms and wrists (the only exception is one rare reverse cut and his Finestra guard).

It's just one strategy, it isn't bad per se, but in certain situations it's dangerous.
Compare to the Lichtenauer traditions, arms are crossed all the time to do the five special strikes, but it's mostly because in this tradition, when you wrestle, you go for hip-throws and not armbars.

Makes it easier to grab your hilt or arms since your sword trails behind your arms, whereas using false edge cuts you avoid this, and the sword reaches its destination sooner

Because fencing is for faggots who believe that they could step onto a real medieval battlefield and do anything other than get themselves killed.

Real medieval combat was like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyz1eJoSeIY only your squeezed on all sides by other armoured men.

""""techniques"""" used in fencing will not work against even a moderately armoured opponent, especially not one who weighs 200lbs, has a shield, and is swinging an axe at you.
>>
>>31061664
The ringeck is widely owned and everyone seems to like it.

For something a bit more cut oriented the crecy is worth looking at
>>
>>31062080
>""""techniques"""" used in fencing will not work against even a moderately armoured opponent

Except, you know, the ones that are specifically fucking designed for fighting against armored opponents.

Man, I'm sure glad I didn't learn how to actually use a sword to get in between armor, real combat is just wildly hitting your opponent with the sword. Why didn't I bring a mace for such an attack? Oh, because this is how you use a sword, duh.
>>
>>31062080
Gee it's almost like people practice unarmed fighting in hema for a reason.

A mediocre full suit of armor will run you several thousand dollars, and when practicing armored combat with historical armors and weapons - not the overly thick armor BoN uses - you run the risk of seriously injuring your sparring partner because the techniques you're practicing are designed to kill armored opponents

I planned for a very /k/ day of shooting in a gravel pit and boxing and sword fighting with shinai (highly recommend those btw, they're dirt cheap and versatile enough to practice most kinds of sword fighting with, from fencing to kendo to longsword shit), but then I drank half a liter of Jim Beam, and now I'm curled up choking down water and ibuprofen and wishing I was dead.

>>31065167
Well I prefer Fiore for its aggression, and find that those who just do German longsword panic when you grab their arm while sparring, since they aren't used to close plays, though that's probably poor teaching.
I know a guy who teaches German longsword who also does Fiore and by his accounts his students don't suffer the same downfalls.
Fiore's system is interlinked with itself too, so you can use many of the same techniques between weapons, which is nice, and gives you a solid base of instinctive movements.

Germans are too showy imo
