I think it's the closest thing to a modern M1 Carbine with proper pointy bullets, which is neat. The 580 series seems reasonably accurate and reliable so far.

I think that Ruger wants to keep prices up by having everything be proprietary, and divorce the Mini line from AK and AR variants as much as possible in the hopes that they'll be saved from an AWB.

But as everyone else said, there's no reason to get one over an SKS because they can't eat steel surpshit.

If you want a non-commie semi-auto .30 cal rifle and absolutely love the aesthetics of the Mini line, a Mini-.300 might be a better option.

It's an Ares SCR, a totally-not-an-AR15-I-swear-Senator lower designed to circumvent dumb ass laws that ban pistol grips. The BCG and buffer tube extend into the stock, although it'll take a standard bolt.

Goddamn I'm tired of seeing this argument. When you design a mag well adapter or modifications to fix that, then you can bother mentioning it. The mini is old as fuck and from a time when AKs and ARs weren't flooding the market. The proprietary mags always comes up, but nobody mentions shit like that with pistols and nobody wants to admit that better designs exist either. Theyve just been spoiled. Either way the mini has no problems selling so why bother changing it. Ruger already makes expensive and budget ARs as it is. There are other areas that should be improved more
