So, PMags. Of the different capacities, are there any that suck or should be avoided entirely? 30, 40, that 60 round drum, are there any in particular that are too finicky to bother with?

The water main to my building burst late one night when everyone was in bed, the parking garage flooded, and management refused to pick up the emergency phone. The city not only had a 24 hour utilities dispatch, but they showed up faster than the fire department does to calls. When I told them this, they told me it's because they have no accommodations while they wait for calls, they just sit in or by the truck.
>>
So I didn't want to be a faggot and make an ar15 build thread, but I'm getting my first ar and this seems like as good a place to ask as any. What I'm planning on doing is picking up a s&w m&p sport ii. Then after a bit of time passes I was hoping to get a gas block flip front sight and magpul furniture because it's cheap, looks good, and gets great reviews. After all that I'll go into optics. Is there anything inherently wrong with this? I'm a recovering fudd and don't know much aside from the basics on these things
>>
>>31019171
Why would I want to do something that useless? I'm not loading a fucking garand. If it's not in a magazine, sitting in a giant box is the next best thing.
>>
>>31019184
How are they useless? I can load a magazine in about 5-10 seconds and you can't.

No reason to remove the fixed front sight at all, aside from the fact its very difficult, especially for what it seems you want to do.
>>
>>31019232
I just figured it would be annoying to see it in the sight picture when I do get optics
>>

Whats wrong with the flip up? Expensive and impractical? Honestly I was just going to do it because the magpul handguard looks nice, but a free float and mbus would be the better choice then?
>>
>>31019242
>I just figured it would be annoying to see it in the sight picture when I do get optics
You won't even see it if you're using a scope, and if you're using a red dot you can co-witness with the front sight or use a Lower 1/3rd co-witness mount and ignore the sight post.

Cheap NSR clones like guntec are probably the best bang for your buck you will find. I recommend you build an AR instead of buying.

Yeah but it's a bit different to get a $600 rifle and tweak it over the course of a few months than it is to spend $1200 up front. Unless you have a better suggestion? Again, this is my first ar. The only reason I stopped on the sport ii is because the reviews have been very good and it's a complete rifle out of the box
>>31019415
>I recommend you build an AR instead of buying
I'm just not sure about exactly what to buy for a build. When you buy an upper and a lower, is that all you have to buy? Or do you have to buy the bcg and trigger assembly as well? I'd be happy to build my own if I knew exactly what to look for
>>
>>31019539
Assembled lowers come with a trigger and everything in them already. Some complete uppers have a BCG and some don't. It's not really a big deal one way or the other.

New ones, I don't know much about because most Americans will choose the V6 simply because it's a larger engine and thus more powerful. And because having a V6 gets you a cool badge you can show off. It's a prestige thing more than anything.

but not long ago, the 22RE engine beat the shit out of six cylinder that toyota produced for the 4runner and trucks.

its an entry level AR. nothing really wrong with it, but with the AR market being as saturated as it is currently, youd get more out of your money by doing research and piecing together an upper and lower.
alternatively, assembling the upper and lower out of individually sourced parts would be the best bang for your buck, but that also takes time, effort, and again, research

Yeah, if you want questionable stainless barrels or PTAC junk.

No FN manufactured barrel kits are available, I usually see a least half a page of them in stock.

PTAC aside, you're sensationalizing. Sure, the FN barrels are better, but that anon wanted cheap. the 16" freedom complete is a $300 complete upper. If he snagged a blem lower, he'd have a complete starter AR for less than $500.

For the money, waiting until the $500 kits are in stock is money well spent.

A good, stable 4" vise, vice blocks for your receivers, a torque wrench, some roll pin punches, potentially a handful of others, depending on the parts your using. most free float handguards come with a special proprietary tool for torquing down their proprietary barrel nut.

With /arg/'s help I built my rifle a few weeks ago. I've never built one before.
>>
>>31021113
Easy. You will want a $7 punch set from Home Chinko, channel locks, and an armorers wrench. Someone posted a lower assembly video in the old thread, it's a good resource.

Don't do bolt catch with punches unless you have a roll pin starter if you've never done it before. Wrap channel lock jaws in duct tape and press it in with those. It's also a good technique for trigger guard roll pins.

A basic punch set, a small brass hammer, and a Buffer tube wrench will do everything you need.

YouTube is actually a good source, watch a couple builds and you will see what it involves.

Also, a pair of adjustable pliers covered in e-tape to install the bolt catch rollpin are a lifesaver. Way easier and more controllable than trying to hammer it in with a punch.

It is very easy, just watch builds and take notes.

I used just a magpul BEV block for mine. It does seem to flex slightly, but if you anchor it properly, and use the pins that come with it, everything stays in place. It can also anchor to the lugs on the barrel extension for working on the upper.

the wheeler block is also damn helpful.

Do what I did. Lurk, /arg/ for a week and take notes. When folks start posting HD pics, take note of manufacturers.

Before asking your questions, make sure you're focused on some specific thing, it keeps most of the shitpost replies to a minimum.

If you see a specific thing that you think would look nice, ask that dude what it is, or where they got it.

have photoshop or similar? Mock up your parts. That helped me out tremendously.

Are cold-hammer forged barrels just a marketing gimmick? Are they a waste of cash?
>>
>>31021884

They are very high quality, but for the average user you won't shoot enough to wear out a Melonite/Phosphate/Fenocite/Nitrided barrel.
>>
>>31021884
Yes
Yes
>>
I don't know enough about guns to really tell the difference between the two. What are the difference between the Ruger AR-556 and the Colt AR-15?

On a similar note, is there such thing as .223 hollow points made of steel? Can't find much with google searches.
>>
>>31021884
They're a meme like KAC
>>
>>31021915
Ruger uses certain proprietary parts when manufacturing, most notably, the gas block FSB. I wouldn't buy either.

Tula and Wolf both make steel cased / bi-metal hollow points in .223

>>31021919
wrong
>>
>>31021915
Ruger has a bunch of pointless proprietary bullshit all over it that has to be removed if you want to play Lego gun
>>
>>31021958
I remember when I was so new to ARs I believed in the Gucci memes
>>
>>31021958

The Tula and Wolf hollow points don't exactly expand like a traditional hollow point though. The tip basically is made to crush so the bullet will tumble quickly.

Which is superior to ice picking. But inferior to fragmentation.
>>
>>31021991
Except they still icepick because Tula/Wolf suck at quality control.

Youtube gel tests of them.
>no expansion
>no fragmentation
>no tumbling
>>
>>31021991
I personally don't like fragmentation and rounds meant to tumble do more damage on flesh over a longer wound track. Frag explodes, dumps most its energy, then usually a small core continues through. Both perform well enough in flesh though and have better barrier penetrating capabilities than Cor-Lokt so no complaints there.
>>
>>31022034
That is literally the exact opposite of true.

There's a reason every single barrier-penetration load ever used by LE is either a heavy-for-caliber hollowpoint match bullet (uses bullet weight to penetrate) or a bonded softpoint.
>>
>>31022059
You didn't say anything I disagree with? Soft points naturally have less penetration through barriers when compared to jacketed hollow points / FMJ. What are you insinuating I said differently?
>>
>>31022097
I'm saying that softpoints have MORE penetration through barriers and do better about not deviating from their path (a good thing) compared to jacketed hollowpoints and FMJ.

You are ass-backwards.

Softpoints have:
>more desirable barrier penetration
>more desirable wounding characteristics at *all* ranges
>more desirable ballistic coefficient than FMJ loads
>>
>>31022122
>better barrier penetration
nope
>better ballistic coefficient
nope

You shoot a quarter inch steel plate with SS109, XM193, and Core-Lokt you will see deep pit, light pit, shallow pit with a flattened lead disc. You can verify this claim very easily, it most certainly does NOT have better penetration through hardened materials.

As for ballistic coefficient, glad I don't have the burden of proof. Look it up, HP / Pointed tips are more slippery in air.
>>
>>31022158
speaking of barrier pen, is $.26 per round a good price for federal XM855 steel core?

>>
>>31022202
Yeah, anything under $.50 is a good price for it anymore but remember XM855 is dogshit
>>
>>31022240
You plan on shooting suppressed?
>>
>>31022273
No, but without a muzzle device at all
>>
>>31022158
Yes, M193 does better than softpoints at punching hardened steel plates.

But a softpoint does better against:
>soft armor
>ceramic hard armor
>car windshields
>masonry (including mud brick/adobe/cinderblock)
>wood
>drywall
>soft steel, cast iron, and aluminum, such as cars/engines

As for ballistic coefficient:
>Hornady M193-clone 55gr FMJ-BT G1 BC: .243
>Lake City M855/SS109 62gr FMJ-BT G1 BC: .304
>Hornady 55gr GMX (monolithic copper hollowpoint) G1 BC: .245
>Hornady 60gr flat-base softpoint G1 BC: .264
>Hornady 55gr V-max flat base (non-bonded softpoint) G1 BC: .255
>Hornady 60gr V-max flat base (non-bonded softpoint) G1 BC: .265
>Speer Deepcurl 62gr FB bonded softpoing G1 BC: .340
>Speer Gold Dot 64gr FB bonded softponit G1 BC: .346
For the same weight, every single softpoint or monolithic copper hollowpoint has a better BC than its boattailed FMJ equivalent.

Moreover, they make softpoints at higher weights and significantly higher BC's than FMJ.

>>

>XM855 is dogshit

Is that so? Why is that? If not that, what should I be looking at?
>>
>>31022273
A flash hider / muzzle brake shouldn't really affect how the rifle cycles, assuming the muzzle device isn't a suppressor. Other trips here will know more
>>
>>31022303
It is so.
>not as flat-shooting as M193 because heavier without a significant increase in BC
>less accurate because steel core is never perfectly centered
>mild steel core and dogshit-bad sectional density from the mild steel core means it penetrates everything worse than M193
>>
>>31022298

Unless you can afford to buy softpoints in bulk, yes.

It's the least-shit of the commonly available military loads, but still shit compared to a monolithic copper hollowpoint or a bonded softpoint.
>>
>>31022293
I've seen absolutely every test contradicting what you're claimimg about soft point penetration. There's literally not a single one I can think that supports your claim.

As for BC, you've provided FMJ, ballistic tip, and jacketed flat noses with no exposed lead. Not exactly what i'd consider soft point considering there's no true soft point.

Your first mag you can fill up with Hornady V-MAX or something similar, if you can afford to fill your loadout in some high-quality shit do it and save the FMJ as a backup / practice ammo.
>>
>>31022443
PSA frequently has the Federal LE 62gr softpoint load for around 50cpr, with the occasional sale dropping it to ~40cpr.

You can occasionally find Speer Gold Dot 64gr or Fed Fusion/Fusion MSR for around 60cpr.

You can occasionally find the Hornady Superformance 62gr GMX load for ~80cpr but it's usually over a buck each. I don't like Superformance, it doesn't shoot that accurately, but it's fast as shit compared to other loads of the same bullet weight.

ammoseek, brassbadger, gunbot, and a few other meta-scraping sites are your friend.

Whats the best legal way for a person under 21 to obtain a stripped lower? There aren't any listings on armslist locally and I don't really want to wait multiple months fora gun show because I have everything besides the lower. I'm seriously considering getting polymer %80 and milling it out with a dremel.
