Pretty sure recoil operation is not as accurate because the whole fucking barrel moves back and forth. It is not going to return to the same exact point every cycle, so the zero will move with every shot. This makes for poor accuracy.

By recoil operated, if you mean straight-blowback, because that'd be retarded, the bolts would be heavy as balls and the springs would be like trucksprings.

If you mean long-recoil, like old automatic shotguns, or short-recoil, like pistols, it's because it ends up being awfully complex, you get more recoil, and inherently less accuracy, due to the moving barrel.

Gas operation and delayed blowback is the ticket for rifles.

Something like an MG3 is a crazy bullethose and mainly it suppresses.
An M2 shoots a huge bullet and either suppresses or shoots at vehicles.

Also the M2 is either mounted to a static tripod or on top of a vehicle, where recoil isn't quite as much of a concern.
